Patient Care Technician

PRIMARY FUNCTION : Responsible for rendering professional clinical care within the medical practice in support of and as directed by the physicians and by the practice manager. Will also have general responsibilities to assist in the day-to-day operation of this office. Places the patients in the examining room ensuring they are as comfortable as possible. Takes accurate histories and physical exam information. Obtains vital signs, secures complaint, enters the information on the patient’s chart. Assists physicians or nurse practitioner with examination and treatment of patient and is accessible to them. Assists physicians and nurse practitioner in office procedures using sterile procedure guidelines to ensure non-contamination of sterile field. Sets up appropriate minor surgery instrument tray. Screens telephone calls for the physicians or physician assistants. Takes accurate clinical messages within the limits of her knowledge and practice policy. May answer patient’s inquiries with respect to medical questions within the limits of knowledge and practice policy. Performs triage duties according to practice protocols and as scheduled by the clinical supervisor / practice manager. Performs other related clinical duties as required. Ensures that all equipment in exam room is clean and properly set up prior to each patient encounter. Cleans and restocks examining rooms for the day’s use. Ensures that reports from diagnostic tests ordered have been received. Prepares all diagnostic reports for availability to physicians. Ensures they are screened and initialed prior to filing in medical record. Takes calls from pharmacies. Calls in prescriptions and prescription refills accurately to pharmacy as directed by the physicians and documents accurately in the medical record. Calls patients with follow up instructions or leaves instructions on patient report phone system. Schedules follow up and annual appointment. Answers clinical mail for the physicians in a timely manner when required. Assists in maintaining all clinical equipment to include sterilizing, if applicable. Evaluates all equipment for damage to report to the clinical supervisor. Assists physicians obtaining prior authorization on medications and diagnostic procedures by calling insurance company in timely manner and provider appropriate medical information and examination finding. Documents telephone calls accurately in medical record. Maintains strict confidentiality. Adequate medical knowledge to perform the essential functions of the job such as providing patient education regarding treatment plans/regimens. Responsibilities and Duties : Oversee and ensure efficient turnover of exam rooms. Maintain exam rooms in a neat and clean manner at all times. Comply with patient needs at all times. Escort patients from waiting room to examination rooms. Remove dressings, casts, etc., and provide patients with gowns as necessary. Ensure patient charts contain all pertinent information and are placed in designated areas for Physicians’ use. Alert Physicians of patients’ allergies prior to beginning exams. Assist Physicians with injections, dressing, and/or other procedures as necessary. Monitor supply levels, and replace as needed. Apply knowledge of sterile techniques and OSHA regulations.
