School Counselor

The School Counselor plays a critical role in supporting the academic, social-emotional, and behavioral development of scholars at Dr. Howard Fuller Collegiate Academy. The School Counselor provides comprehensive counseling services designed to help students succeed academically, navigate personal and social challenges, and build the skills necessary for college and career readiness. This role supports students through individualized counseling, behavioral and emotional interventions, attendance and re‑engagement strategies, and collaboration with families and community partners. The School Counselor works closely with school leadership, teachers, and student support teams to foster a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment where all scholars can thrive. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Student Counseling and Support Provide individual and small-group counseling to support students’ academic success, emotional well-being, and social development. Support students experiencing behavioral or emotional challenges through targeted intervention strategies. Provide crisis intervention and support students in developing coping strategies and resilience skills. Maintain a caseload of students identified through school support systems and provide ongoing monitoring and support. MTSS-B and Behavioral Interventions Support the implementation of Tier 2 and Tier 3 behavioral and emotional interventions through the Multi‑Tiered System of Supports for Behavior (MTSS-B). Work with students identified through the MTSS system to develop intervention plans and monitor progress. Collaborate with teachers and school leadership to implement behavioral strategies that support student success. Attendance and Student Re‑engagement Identify and support students experiencing chronic absenteeism or truancy. Develop and implement re‑engagement plans that address underlying barriers to attendance. Conduct home visits when necessary to support attendance improvement and family engagement. Support for Vulnerable and At‑Risk Students Provide individualized counseling and support services to students experiencing housing instability or other significant life challenges. Connect students and families with community resources, shelters, and mental health services when needed. Advocate for equitable access to support services and educational opportunities for marginalized students. Scheduling and Academic Support Collaborate with school leadership and instructional staff to address student scheduling needs and resolve scheduling conflicts. Support students in developing academic plans aligned with graduation requirements and post‑secondary goals. Assist students in navigating course selections, credit completion, and academic pathways. Conflict Resolution and Peer Mediation Facilitate peer mediation programs to support students in resolving conflicts and developing leadership skills. Provide conflict resolution support for students, staff, and families when interpersonal challenges arise. Promote restorative practices that strengthen relationships and build positive school culture. Family and Community Engagement Conduct home visits when appropriate to strengthen relationships with families and support student success. Develop and maintain partnerships with community organizations, mental health agencies, and social service providers. Provide families with guidance and resources that support their child’s academic and emotional development. Transition and Postsecondary Planning Support students in developing transition goals related to college, career, and life after graduation. Provide guidance on college readiness, career exploration, and post‑secondary opportunities. Work collaboratively with staff to ensure students are prepared for successful transitions beyond high school. QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS Education Master’s degree in School Counseling, Counseling, Social Work, Psychology, or a related field required. Licensure Valid Wisconsin School Counselor license or eligibility for licensure through the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI). Experience Experience working with high school students in a counseling or student support role preferred. Experience supporting at‑risk or vulnerable youth populations strongly preferred. Experience working within MTSS or behavioral intervention frameworks preferred. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Strong understanding of adolescent development and student support strategies. Experience providing counseling services and crisis intervention in school settings. Ability to analyze student needs and develop targeted support plans. Strong collaboration and communication skills when working with families, staff, and community partners. Commitment to equity, inclusion, and supporting the success of all scholars.
