The Tucson Fire Fleet Management Division is proud to be certified as an ASE Blue Seal Repair Facility. The Emergency Vehicle Technician is part of this team dedicated to providing service solutions that exceed our customers’ expectations. With a specialized fleet of emergency response vehicles, the Tucson Fire Department provides the latest technologies, training, and industry certification opportunities to keep the fleet management team and the fleet at the forefront of the industry.

This position performs preventive maintenance and repairs on Class 3 or higher vehicles and requires the ability to work in a fast-paced environment, on-call on a rotating schedule, weekends, holidays, and overtime as needed. Respond to situations while on call within one (1) hour.

This position requires a Section 609 Air Conditioning Refrigerant Recovery and Recycling certification within 30 days of hire. A City of Tucson Forklift Operator certification within 60 days of hire.

This position requires continued education and renewal, ability to read, write, communicate, and follow oral and written instructions in the English language, and have a rollaway toolbox with a full set of tools required to perform journey level maintenance and repairs on a Class 3 – 8 vehicles.

Skill Based Pay/Certifications and expected timeline:

The Emergency Vehicle Technician classification is included in a skill-based pay plan which provides compensation for achieving and maintaining 28 ASE and EVT certifications required for this position as listed below. ASE and EVT certification fees are paid for by the department with a passing score.

Employees in this classification are required to progress through the levels of certification in a consecutive manner as listed below.

• Master Fire Apparatus Technician Certification (6 EVT Certifications)
• Master Ambulance Technician Certification (5 EVT Certifications)
• Master Automobile Technician Certification (9 ASE Certifications)
• Master Medium/Heavy Truck Technician (8 ASE Certifications)

Entrance into the classification requires achievement of the following certifications within the first year of employment:

Tier 1 ASE Certifications:
• ASE A5 Brakes
• ASE T4 Brakes
• ASE T5 Suspension & Steering
• ASE T6 Electrical/Electronic Systems

Tier 1 EVT Certifications:
• EVT F1 Maintenance, Inspection, and Testing of Fire Apparatus
• EVT F5 Aerial Fire Apparatus
• EVT E0 Maintenance, Inspection, and Testing of Ambulances

Achievement of the following certifications is required upon completion of the second year of employment:

Tier 2 ASE Certifications:
• ASE T2 Diesel Engines
• ASE T8 Preventive Maintenance
• ASE A4 Suspension and Steering
• ASE A9 Light Vehicle Diesel Engines

Tier 2 EVT Certifications:
• EVT F3 Fire Pumps & Accessories
• EVT F6 Allison Automatic Transmissions

Achievement of the following certifications is required upon completion of the third year of employment

ABOUT THIS JOB

Position Specific Summary

The Emergency Vehicle Technician position at the City of Tucson’s Fire Department is responsible for detailed and complex journey level service on fire apparatus, ambulances, and fire support equipment based on Tucson Fire Department policies, manufacturer requirements, and applicable National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards.

Work is performed under the supervision of an Emergency Vehicle Technician Supervisor. This position does not supervise.

Work schedule may include shift work and on-call status as required, including weekends and holidays.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Performs preventive maintenance, inspections and repairs on specialized fire apparatus, ambulances, forklifts, trailers, and support equipment. Services systems such as diesel engines, automatic transmissions, fire pumps, aerial devices, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, air and hydraulic brakes, air conditioning, steering, and suspensions. Performs any routine preventive maintenance work such as changing oils, lubrications and inspections. Uses any other equipment such as hydraulic hoists and overhead crane.
• Performs troubleshooting and diagnoses electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, and computerized vehicle components and systems.
• Conducts road tests to evaluate vehicle performance and identify issues.
• Interprets and applies information from technical manuals, web sites, system flows to diagnose and resolve issues. Drives vehicles and performs quality control checks when required.
• Prepares and maintains accurate records of work performed, and parts used on a fleet maintenance computer system. Maintains established safety standards; ensures a clean and organized work environment.
• Attends department meetings, OEM trainings, vendor trainings, and unit predelivery inspections.
• Proficient at reading and using micrometers, dial calipers, torque wrenches, tape measures, service and repair manuals, and electrical wiring diagrams.
• Performs all other duties and tasks as assigned.

Working Conditions:

Indoor and outdoor work with heavy exposure to extreme physical, ergonomic, or emotional hazardous environment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

., Minimum Qualifications
6 months post High School
4 years recent relevant experience, performing maintenance and repairs on class 3 or higher vehicles, or equivalent equipment
Valid and Unrestricted Class B CDL, with tanker endorsement
Ability to lift equipment and materials of up to 75lbs.
Section 609 Air Conditioning Refrigerant Recovery and Recycling certification within 30 days of hire.
A City of Tucson Forklift Operator certification within 60 days of hire.

Preferred Qualifications
Strong background in 12-volt electrical systems, multiplex systems, Class 3-8 air brake systems, diesel engines, automatic transmissions, Hydraulic systems, pneumatic, A/C systems, welding and fabrication experience, ASE Master Auto Technician, ASE Master Medium/Heavy Truck Technician, Master EVT Ambulance Technician, and Master EVT Apparatus Technician.
