PAID Pediatric Externship - Central Institute for the Deaf (CID)

Overview The Martha E. Jones Pediatric Audiology Center at CID is accepting applications for a 4th year audiology extern for the 2027-2028 year. The extern will work in a hybrid clinic providing audiologic services for children ages 0-18 in outpatient and educational settings. The program offers a full range of rehabilitative audiologic services, including behavioral hearing evaluations, hearing aid evaluation, fitting and troubleshooting, cochlear implant programming and management, bone conduction hearing aid evaluation, DM/HAT management, parent counseling and educational outreach. Audiologists collaborate with families, the Teacher of the Deaf, and interprofessional team members such as SLP, OT, behavioral specialist, and family support specialist. Extern Responsibilities The extern will participate in all aspects of the audiology clinic and in the state-of-the-art 3D Print Lab. Duties include: Assistant in ear mold manufacturing: design, post‑print production, and logistics Performing pediatric evaluations (infant/toddler and school‑age), tympanometry, hearing aid fitting and verification, cochlear implant mapping and management, bone conduction device management, DM selection and verification, behavioral evaluations, and documentation/reporting Providing auditory processing support and hearing screening as scheduled Participating in regular clinical and educational meetings, audiology grand rounds, and manufacturer training sessions Clinical Experience Typical weekdays (37.5 h, five days): Everyday: Pediatric evaluations (infant/toddler, school‑age), tympanometry, otoacoustic emissions, hearing aid dispensing and fitting, cochlear implant evaluations and rehabilitation, and documentation Rarely: Hearing screenings, acoustic reflex testing, evoked potential assessments, audiologic rehabilitation (group or individual), and cerumen management Never: Adult hearing evaluations, auditory processing evaluations, intra‑operative monitoring, industrial/hearing conservation, vestibular assessments or rehabilitation, tinnitus assessments, or tinnitus rehabilitation Qualifications Externship expectations: Mastery before start: otoscopy, tympanometry, audiometry evaluations, earmold impressions, hearing aid programming/verification, foundational cochlear implant familiarity, fundamentals of ABR/OAE interpretation, professional writing During externship: cochlear implant mapping and management, hearing aid management and troubleshooting, bone conduction device management and troubleshooting, DM selection/verification/troubleshooting, behavioral evaluation (VRA, CPA, behavioral observation), documentation and reporting Training, Support & Compensation Stipend provided Travel for interviews not compensated Vacation days negotiable Continuing education through meetings, online formats, and local conferences Orientation to clinical policies, patient rights, and quality assessment provided Application Process Interested candidates should submit a single packet to View email address on click.appcast.io no later than September 8, 2026 .
