Position: Under the supervision of the Skilled Trades Manager – Custodian, the Floor Care Technician (Night Shift) is responsible for maintaining campus flooring systems to meet or exceed APPA Level 1–2 cleanliness standards (Orderly Spotlessness to Ordinary Tidiness) while supporting a safe and sanitary environment. Hours of operation are 10:30 PM – 06:30 AM or 11:30 PM – 07:30 AM. This position performs restorative and preventative floor maintenance during off-hours to ensure floors are clean, safe, and presentable for daily operations. This role applies professional floor care practices, equipment operation, and chemical handling techniques in alignment with established custodial and environmental services standards, ensuring quality outcomes and a safe environment for cadets, faculty, staff, and visitors. It supports the Facilities Strategic Plan by maintaining APPA Level 2 standards while improving the appearance and extending the lifecycle of NMMI’s flooring assets. This is an exempt, 12-month full-time position with a salary range of $50,000.00 - $65,000.00. The job description is available upon request. The job description is available upon request.
Tasks:
Perform hard surface floor restoration, including stripping, sealing, and refinishing VCT, terrazzo, concrete surfaces, wood surfaces, and more.
Apply multi-coat finishes and burnish floors to achieve a durable, high-gloss appearance.
Perform routine floor maintenance, including sweeping, dust mopping, and wet mopping of high-traffic areas.
Perform routine carpet care, including vacuuming, spot cleaning, extraction, and bonnet cleaning
Other duties as assigned.
Essential Skills:
Knowledge of APPA cleanliness standards and custodial best practices.
Understanding of floor care techniques, equipment operations, and chemical properties (including pH balance).
Skill in operating and maintaining industrial cleaning equipment.
Ability to troubleshoot floor conditions and apply corrective actions.
Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality standards.
Qualifications:
Required:
High school diploma or GED
1–3 years of experience in commercial floor care or custodial operations
Ability to operate industrial cleaning equipment
Ability to perform physically demanding work and lift up to 50–70 pounds
Preferred:
Experience in institutional or higher education facilities
Knowledge of APPA custodial standards and service levels
Experience performing restorative floor care during night operations
