Job Description Reporting to the Dean for Medical Education, the Associate Dean for Faculty Development in Medical Education (ADFDME) oversees Harvard Medical School (HMS) faculty development efforts aimed at educators of medical students and supports medical education research efforts focused on undergraduate medical education (UME) from across the HMS ecosystem. The overarching mission of this ADFDME position is to ensure that Quad-based and hospital-based HMS faculty are fully prepared both to serve in instructional and evaluative roles within the MD program and to study aspects of this educational program in a rigorous manner. Oversight of Faculty Development for HMS Teaching Faculty in the MD Program Faculty development programming for those who teach or evaluate in the MD program takes multiple forms, including live events and workshops, online modules and courses, and 1:1 observation and coaching of individual faculty as needed. The ADFDME leads the team that designs, delivers, tracks, and improves these resources, working closely with both Associate Deans for Curriculum and Assessment, UME Deans in the affiliate hospitals, and EPCC leaders to ensure successful execution. This programming has as its intended audience the HMS faculty who are involved in: classroom teaching, including in preclerkship courses, advanced integrated science courses, and other required curricular elements in both Pathways and HST - Pillars of Practice, Frontiers in Healthcare topics, and Pathways curricular threads; clinical teaching, including in preclerkship clinical skills courses, PCE core clerkships, and post-PCE clinical experiences, in collaboration with the affiliated hospitals as needed; teaching with technology; fostering an optimal learning environment; and UME curriculum development and educational innovation. Two annual flagship faculty development events for which the ADFDME has direct supervisory responsibility are: Medical Education Day; Symposium on the Science of Learning. Support of HMS Faculty Pursuing Medical Education Research Efforts in UME The ADFDME supports, advises, and serves as a core resource for HMS faculty who are pursuing medical education research efforts focused on the HMS UME program. This work ensures that all educational research arising from the HMS MD curriculum is designed in a mission-aligned manner and arises from a solid conceptual framework; is conducted in a responsible fashion that achieves its goals while minimizing burden to our faculty, staff and students; is reviewed by a responsible committee charged with this specific function; and is enabled in the HMS ecosystem through robust professional development for those faculty and staff interested in conducting such projects. This function is a collaborative one and involves close cooperation with the Assistant Director of Educational Scholarship and Faculty Development. Collaborative, Communicative, and Supervisory Responsibilities The ADFDME serves as one of three Assoc. Deans within the Office of Medical Education (OME), leads the Faculty Development administrative staff within the OME, and is the representative of the teaching faculty development mission in broader educational spaces within the Program in Medical Education (PME) and HMS. The ADFDME is responsible for attending and participating in: monthly meetings of the EPCC. Weekly group meetings with the DME, other OME Associate Deans, and Dean for Students; weekly group meetings of the OME leadership team; monthly meetings of the PME Executive Committee; monthly meetings of the PME leadership with ADUMEs at the affiliated hospitals; biweekly "huddle" meetings of the Faculty Dev. administrative staff within the OME. The ADFDME serves to oversee the work of the Faculty Development administrative staff, including the Assistant Director of Educational Scholarship and Faculty Development. Qualifications Basic Qualifications: MD or equivalent degree. Active member of the HMS faculty with academic rank of Assistant Professor or higher. At least 5 years of active experience as a faculty member teaching undergraduate medical students. Additional Qualifications and Skills: Insight into the mindset, experiences, and conflicts facing teaching faculty and in particular those pursuing medical education careers. Familiarity with the curriculum of both MD tracks at HMS and the larger HMS environment and infrastructure. Commitment to supporting the values of the Program in Medical Education. Additional Information Standard Hours/Schedule: Please note this is a part-time, 17.5 hours (.5FTE) per week position. The work schedule and location will be set by the department at its discretion and based upon operational needs. When not working at a Harvard or Harvard-designated location, employees in hybrid positions must work in a Harvard registered state in compliance with the University's Policy on Employment Outside of Massachusetts.
