Community Corrections Officer

General Description This is a professional Corrections position primarily responsible for the assessment and supervision of pretrial or probation defendants. The role requires strong communication, conflict management, problem‑solving, time management, initiative, accountability, professionalism, integrity, and sound judgment. Duties are performed under the general supervision of a supervisor or designee and include maintaining accurate records, attending court proceedings, and ensuring compliance with court‑ordered conditions. The position is eligible for Night Shift Differential Pay. Essential Job Functions (Responsibilities) Provides professional case management and supervision to pretrial or probation defendants, ensuring community protection and security. Completes risk/needs assessments for all defendants to determine caseload assignment and needed services; connects defendants with community resources. Administers risk assessments to evaluate reoffending and flight risk, assigning appropriate supervision level. Employs motivational interviewing skills during interviews, assessments, and face‑to‑face contacts. Conducts initial intake orientations and records defendant progress. Documents each defendant’s progress or lack thereof and follows established local procedures for noncompliance violations. Verifies defendant background information, including residence, employment, and criminal histories. Complies with state and federal privacy, confidentiality, security, and data handling requirements. Maintains computer case files and records according to County requirements. Prepares court reports and testifies in court proceedings regarding defendant status. Refers defendants to appropriate agencies for services and monitors participation. Participates in staff meetings and attends relevant trainings. Conducts intake interviews, record checks, urinalysis screenings, and field visits to verify residency and ensure public safety. Notifies the Court timely of new law violations or non‑compliance issues. Adapts and applies evidence‑based practices (EBP) and best practices in supervision. Maintains and updates defendant data in the computer system. Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with attorneys, judges, law enforcement, and community agencies. Provides crisis intervention when needed and assists in program development for offenders. Serves as a liaison with all segments of the criminal justice community. Provides training and completes daily observation reports for new employees as required. Performs other related work, including duties in extreme emergency situations. Minimum Qualifications Associate’s Degree in Criminal Justice, Criminology, Psychology, Social Work, Sociology, Public Administration, or a closely related field. One year of experience in probation, pretrial release, community corrections, counseling, evidence‑based programs, case management, social work, and/or corrections; educational or experiential equivalency may be considered. Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish preferred. Valid Florida Driver’s License and FCIC/NCIC certification within thirty (30) days of hire. Demonstrated knowledge and ability to conduct investigations, maintain confidentiality, and perform duties under stressful conditions. Strong communication skills, both written and oral. Ability to work independently and in both office and field environments. Knowledge of modern pretrial and probation practices, court and case management procedures, and relevant federal, state, and local regulations. Proficiency with personal computers and related software. Commitment to professional integrity, ethics, and continuous learning. Physical Demand Requirements Light physical demand; 20 pounds maximum lifting. Frequent lifting and carrying up to 10 lbs.; significant walking/standing required. Ability to walk, run, bend, climb stairs, and stand for extended periods. Capacity to work under stressful conditions and handle physical and mental challenges.
