SUMMARY 

The Optometric Technician is responsible for providing the highest quality optometric patient care possible.

Please note that this job description is not exhaustive, and additional duties may be assigned as needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

• High school diploma or GED required
• Two years of optometric experience (not a must)
• Must complete the home study ophthalmic program within six months of employment
• JCAHPO COA Certification required within 18 months of employment

• Excellent communication skills, proper grammar, and writing capability
• Learn a working knowledge of all ophthalmic terminology, spelling, and pronunciation.

• Obtain a complete hands-on working knowledge of applicable computer software
• Possess a caring, patient, and friendly attitude
• Learn to achieve complete knowledge of all forms that are used in the practice
• Familiarize to gain understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the eye
• Self-directed, highly motivated, able to multi-task and work under pressure in a fast-paced environment
• Learn to appropriately prioritize patient testing
• Maintain practice confidentiality, follow HIPAA/OSHA guidelines, and the rules and regulations of the practice of which you will be taught.
• Gain a working knowledge of post-operative Medicare, Medicare Replacement, and Medicaid plans

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The duties below will be taught during training:

1. Consistently performs proper documentation of case history, confrontation visual fields, pupil evaluation, screening extra-ocular muscle function, visual acuity, assessment of angle depth, instillation of diagnostic pharmaceutical agents, Amsler grid, and other functions as directed by clinical physician
2. Obtains eyeglass prescription via lensometer
3. Performs patient testing accurately and effectively as directed by the clinical provider(s) i.e. Slit Lamp Exam, PAMS, Visual Fields, Color Test, Tonometry, OCT’s, Fundus Photos, etc.
4. If assigned to an ophthalmologist: must be able to refract with +/- .50 diopters
5. If assigned to a retina Physicians(s): assists retina with intraocular injections as needed
6. Effectively communicates physician instructions to patients and documents accordingly
7. Assists the physician with pharmacy calls, patient calls, etc.
8. Ensures scheduling template is being followed correctly
9. Ensures all patient lanes are clean and well-stocked at the end of each day
10. Ensures all equipment is turned off and covered properly at the end of the day
11. Completes tech station duties daily
12. Call in RX’s – Only certified ophthalmic techs can ERx. The exception is the tech can ERx if scribing for a doctor and the script is done under the doctor’s name
13. Must understand sterile technique
14. Professional and Personal Development/Goals and Objectives
    1. Exhibits professional demeanor with a positive enthusiastic attitude at all times when representing the practice
    2. Maintains certification, where applicable, and continues to improve skills. Must attend in-service and webinar training seminars as directed by the Clinical Manager
    3. Sets goals and objectives for professional growth. Reviews and revises goals on an ongoing basis
    4. Provides input on how to improve customer service, decrease costs, and increase revenues for the practice
15. Customer Service
    1. Supports the practice’s core values and mission statement to develop, enhance, and promote quality customer service through team effort
    2. Exhibits flexibility, sensitivity, and respect while maintaining an effective working relationship with all team members
16. Maintains practice confidentiality and follows HIPAA guidelines
17. Follows the rules and regulations of the practice as documented in the practice employee manual
18. Completes any additional tasks and responsibilities as requested by the Clinical Manager
19. Assumes other duties as assigned

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

• The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
• The majority of the time on the job is spent walking, sitting, using hands to hold items and move items, reaching with hands and arms, talking, hearing, stooping, crouching, and bending
• At times, the job may require weight to be lifted up to 50 pounds
• The job requires the following types of vision: close, distance, peripheral, and depth perception.
• Typical noise level for the work environment of this job is moderate (i.e. business offices with computers and printers, light traffic)
• Working in an office environment with sustained posture in a seated position for extensive periods of time
• Must be able to communicate clearly in person and over the telephone
• Hearing must be adequate to perform job duties in person and over the telephone
