Summary:

UNC Campus Health at Carolina is a multi-specialty ambulatory college health clinic providing quality, and affordable health care for eligible students (including D-1 Athletes), faculty/staff and spouses. Annually, UNC Campus Health at Carolina has more than 80,000 patient encounters, which includes Primary Care and Gynecology as well as specialty clinics in Sports Medicine, Orthopedics, Physical Therapy, acupuncture, counseling and psychological services, travel clinic and allergy clinic. Weekend acute care is provided from 8-5pm. On site ancillary services include pharmacy, OTC pharmacy, Student Stores pharmacy, medical laboratory, and radiology.

Campus Health collaborates with Student Wellness and Campus Recreation and other Student Affairs partners to provide education and outreach to assist in keeping the campus population healthy.

Education and research comprise another important function of Campus Health. Campus Health provides clinical rotations and practicums for students in the School of Education, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Social Work and Public Health, Department of Medical Technology, Physical Therapy, Occupational Health and Radiology. In addition, Campus Health serves as a research site for a number of faculty and graduate student grants and contracts, where Campus Health staff participate with the principal investigators across a variety of medical specialties.

The Medical Assistant II, Certified in Orthopaedics at UNC Campus Health provides direct patient care within a sports medicine-focused setting, utilizing the nursing process to support a broad range of conditions from acute injuries to chronic concerns. This role emphasizes the management of orthopedic and sports medicine needs, including injury triage, post-surgical care, and assistance with procedures such as joint injections, casting, and splinting, in addition to primary care responsibilities. Serving as a key liaison between providers and patients, the position also supports clinical procedures, patient education, and specialty-specific care to promote optimal outcomes.

Responsibilities:

• Performs rooming and/or intake process, collecting and data, including vital signs, height, weight, and data related to patient's reason for visit.
• Collects patient and family data, including medical and social history.
• Reviews patient's current medication list, allergies and preferred pharmacy.
• Assists the provider as directed, during treatments, examinations and procedures.
• Collects specimens and performs phlebotomy.
• Administers medications under the direction of a provider.
• Performs tests, for examples EKG, eye exams, under the direction of a provider.
• Reviews the patient record to determine whether patient requires any routine health screenings.
• Ensures exam/procedure room contains appropriate supplies, equipment, forms and educational materials are available and ready for use during visit/procedure.
• Provides patient with after-visit, follow-up, self-care or procedural instructions and/or educational materials as directed.
• Prepares, cleans, stocks and maintains exam and treatment rooms.
• Cleans and sterilizes instruments.
• Assists with patient registration, check in/check out, appointment scheduling, and scheduling of tests and treatments, and referrals.
• Answers clinic telephone and assists in-basket under the direction of a provider or nurse.
• Assists in emergency situations as directed by a provider or nurse.
• Additional Essential Responsibilities of a Certified Medical Assistant II may include: -Precepts new medical assistant/credentialed medical assistant hires and medical assistant externs-Trains other medical assistants in clinic procedures-Assists the physician with maintaining preventive health measures for a panel of patients.-Performs clinic based quality or safety role (ex. clinic safety coordinator, maintains immunization or medication registry, performs medication, or other required audits) -Manages clinic supply ordering

Other information: Education Requirements: None required as long as other position qualifications are met. Completion of a Medical Assisting program accredited by either the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or the Accreditation Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) is strongly preferred but not required. Licensure/Certification Requirements: Requires Medical Assistant certification by either the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA), American Medical Technologists (AMT), National Health Career Association (CCMA), National Association of Health Professionals (NRCMA), or National Center for Competency Testing (NCMA). Basic Life Support Certification from American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC) required. Professional Experience Requirements: Possess at least one year of full-time experience as a Medical Assistant, Certified. Demonstrate possession of the competencies outlined in the Medical Assistant, Certified Advancement Worksheet through their application and interview. Knowledge/Skills/and Abilities Requirements: Ability to perform the essential functions of the position as outlined above. Demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills. Demonstrated ability to engage positively with patients and families and to work as a team with staff and providers. Ability to use a computer to document required information into the electronic medical record.
