Johns Hopkins Health System is seeking an experienced Public Safety Lieutenant to provide leadership, operational oversight, and strategic direction for our Public Safety team. This leadership role is responsible for ensuring a safe, secure, and welcoming environment for patients, visitors, employees, and physicians while promoting excellence in healthcare security operations.

Position Summary

The Public Safety Lieutenant serves as a frontline leader responsible for supervising daily security operations, developing staff, ensuring compliance with organizational policies, and coordinating emergency response efforts. This role partners with hospital leadership and external public safety agencies to support a culture of safety, professionalism, and accountability.

What You'll Do

  • Lead and supervise daily Public Safety operations, including staffing, scheduling, hiring, training, coaching, and performance management.
  • Ensure the safety and security of patients, visitors, staff, physicians, and hospital property.
  • Respond to security incidents, emergencies, and critical events while directing coordinated response efforts.
  • Conduct investigations involving incidents, complaints, and security breaches, preparing detailed reports and recommendations.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate security policies, procedures, and operational best practices.
  • Perform facility risk assessments and recommend strategies to reduce vulnerabilities and improve security.
  • Oversee patrol operations, access control, surveillance systems, and emergency preparedness activities.
  • Build collaborative relationships with hospital leadership, local law enforcement, fire departments, and emergency response agencies.
  • Mentor and develop Public Safety Officers, Corporals, and Sergeants to maintain high standards of professionalism and service.
  • Monitor security technology and recommend system enhancements to improve operational effectiveness.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice, Security Management, or a related field preferred. Equivalent experience may be considered.
  • Five to seven (5–7) years of progressively responsible experience in security management, law enforcement, military service, or a related field.
  • Previous supervisory experience in a healthcare security environment required.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age (exceptions may apply for qualified military, law enforcement, or healthcare security experience).
  • Valid driver's license with no more than five (5) current points.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Specialized training in healthcare security, emergency management, crisis intervention, or emergency response.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Experience with surveillance systems, access control technology, and incident reporting software.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead teams during emergency and high-pressure situations.

Required Certifications

Successful candidates must obtain and maintain required certifications based on their work location, including:

  • IAHSS Supervisor Level Certification
  • CPR
  • Stop the Bleed
  • Narcan
  • De-escalation training
  • State-required Security Guard or Security Officer License (where applicable)

Schedule

  • Full-time
  • Exempt position
  • Must be available to work rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, and overtime as operational needs require.

Salary Range: Minimum 27.46/hour - Maximum 48.06/hour. Compensation will be commensurate with equity and experience for roles of similar scope and responsibility. In cases where the range is displayed as a $0 amount, salary discussions will occur during candidate screening calls, before any subsequent compensation discussion is held between the candidate and any hiring authority.
