Position Summary Responsible for providing quality, customer‑oriented laboratory services including registration, specimen collection, specimen processing, and related duties. Performs venipuncture on patients, maintains necessary equipment and supplies, and communicates effectively to all levels of laboratory staff and external contacts. Acts as a resource for phlebotomy technicians. Department & Schedule Phlebotomy Inpatient – 40 hours per week (Monday‑Friday 7:30 am‑4:00 pm with rotating weekends & holidays) Responsibilities Perform venipunctures per laboratory policies, including timed specimens, blood cultures, pediatric and neonatal specimens. Verify patient and specimen identification; label specimens accordingly. Receive, prepare, centrifuge, and aliquot laboratory specimens, and follow special handling instructions. Optimize specimen routing and distribution to appropriate lab sections within specified time frames; assist with pickup and delivery as needed. Prepare workstations with essential supplies. Monitor and record daily temperatures; perform scheduled equipment maintenance. Complete required logs for documentation and troubleshooting; communicate with supervisor. Acquire and apply knowledge of the LIS and its functions; perform basic LIS functions in the laboratory information system. Register patients in EPIC registration system, including demographic updates, insurance validation, and medical record number assignment. Answer telephone calls per department policy. Conform to hospital standards of performance and conduct, including patient rights and behavioral standards. Manage time to meet attendance and punctuality standards. Attend department meetings, deliver reports promptly, and document quality improvement activities. Assist in training new lab support technicians and phlebotomy students. Complete all required laboratory and hospital safety, compliance, and competency training. Perform special procedures requested by supervisors, assistants, and specialists. Update inventories, orders, and maintain supplies as needed in collaboration with supervisors. Assist in writing training programs, SOPs, and establishing competencies. Participate in QI activities and validate effectiveness of implemented solutions. Troubleshoot technical and non‑technical problems, record on the problem log, and report issues to supervisory staff. Adapt to departmental needs, including assisting teammates and fostering teamwork. Education & Credentials High School Diploma or GED; completion of a NAACLS accredited phlebotomy program. Phlebotomy Certification (ASCP) preferred. One year of Phlebotomy and/or specimen processing experience required. Knowledge & Skills Excellent English communication skills (oral and written) and interpersonal skills for courteous, customer‑service interactions. Technical competency with hospital computer systems such as Microsoft Office, patient registration systems (EPIC), and Laboratory Information Systems (Sunquest). Excellent analytical and critical‑thinking skills; strong attention to detail, organization, and follow‑through. Strict confidentiality of all personal/health‑sensitive information. Ability to handle challenging situations and balance multiple priorities. Compensation $20.50–$26.52 per hour.
