Special Education Paraprofessional

Under general supervision, serves as a support to the assigned classroom teacher or instructional area in providing educational opportunities for each student within Special Education. This position reports to the Principal or designee.

Key responsibilities include conducting small group or individual classroom activities with students based on lesson plans developed by the teacher, assisting with preparation of materials for instruction, performing special duties as required for meeting the unique needs of specific student populations, typing and processing correspondence, operating the computerized circulation system and records, assisting in inventory of materials and equipment, and assuming responsibility for operation of the media center and supervision of students in the approved absence of the media specialist.

Additional duties include assisting with routine record keeping, housekeeping, and school-wide supervision such as loading/unloading buses.

Key job requirements include holding an associate's degree or higher in any subject from a GaPSC-accepted accredited institution, completing two (2) years of college coursework above the remedial level with a grade of "C" or better at a GaPSC-accepted accredited institution, or passing the GACE Paraprofessional Assessment and holding a minimum of a high school diploma or GED equivalent. Paraprofessional experience serving school age children is desirable, and bilingual or bicultural experience is required for certain positions.

Must hold or be eligible for a GaPSC-issued Paraprofessional License. The Certification Team will apply for the Paraprofessional License upon hire.

Field/Endorsement: PARAPROFESSIONAL EDUCATOR

Training and/or experience in special needs of disabled populations such as first aid, ability to perform a two person lift for students as needed, or behavior management is preferred.

Light duty - On most occasions sitting at a desk or table; intermittent sitting, standing, or stooping. Moderate lifting or carrying; fifty (50) lbs. or less.

Note: This is a grade 16, 190-day position that starts at a step 6 and pays for experience up to a step 8.
