Job Description and Duties
Cannabis Control Section (CCS) handles matters involving cannabis, industrial hemp, alcoholic beverages, kratom, and more. CCS deputies represent state agencies in civil litigation in all levels of both state and federal court (both plaintiff and defense), and the Department of Cannabis Control before the Office of Administrative Hearings and the Cannabis Control Appeals Panel.
The duties of CCS Deputy Attorneys General include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Directly handle complex, sensitive, and often high-profile civil litigation matters, including prosecuting civil enforcement cases and defending client agencies in state and federal trial and appellate courts.
- Draft discovery, pleadings, and motions.
- First- and second-chair hearings and trials.
- Handle judicial review proceedings arising out of administrative litigation before the California appellate courts.
- Apply sound legal judgment and abide by professional ethics.
- Ability to work independently and remotely within the requirements of the department's telework policy.
- Advise client agencies on legal matters, including investigation strategy, application and enforcement of cannabis laws and regulations, litigation strategy, settlement options, and expert and/or consultant needs.
- Work in a team and collaborative environment.
Directly handle licensing matters involving the revocation, denial, and discipline of licenses, and the embargo and condemnation of misbranded goods.
All applicants must reside in California and be members in good standing of the California State Bar. Deputies may telework or work in-office at their option but are required to attend regularly scheduled in-person meetings at their local office. Travel and in-person attendance may be required for trials, court appearances, witness interviews, depositions, and operationally as needed.

This is a 12-month limited term position that may be extended to a maximum of 24 months and/or may become a permanent position based on operational needs.
