Description

Position Summary:

The Director, LMI Financial Risk & Controls is a senior leadership role responsible for strengthening LMI’s control environment by overseeing key financial and operational risks. This position provides strategic oversight of segregation of duties (SoD), financial reporting controls, system implementation risk, and emerging business process risks across the organization.

As a trusted advisor and subject matter expert (SME), this Director brings a comprehensive understanding of LMI’s end-to-end operations and risk interdependencies to proactively identify control gaps, mitigate material risks, and reduce audit findings. The role partners across LMI to ensure risks are evaluated holistically and addressed sustainably.

The Director also leads enterprise engagement with Internal Audit, External Audit (EY), and state regulators, ensuring effective examination management and long-term remediation of findings.

Key Responsibilities:

Control & Risk Leadership

• Provide LMI level oversight of segregation of duties risks across financial and operational systems.


• Lead assessment of financial reporting controls to ensure effectiveness, regulatory compliance, and alignment with governance standards.


• Evaluate risk and control implications of system implementations, enhancements, automation initiatives, and process redesign efforts.


• Review new asset classes, business initiatives, and operational changes to identify control gaps, accounting risks, and downstream impacts across functions.


• Serve as an enterprise SME on financial and operational risk interdependencies, advising senior leadership on emerging and cross-functional risk exposure.


• Proactively identify potential issues which could lead to deficiencies, material weaknesses or significant deficiencies and drive preventive action plans.

Audit & Regulatory Governance

• Serve as lead contact to External Audit (EY) for financial controls, risk and audit related matters.


• Oversee coordination and response management for Internal Audit engagements and state regulatory examinations.


• Provide strategic leadership in the development and execution of remediation plans, ensuring corrective actions mitigate both immediate and future risk.


• Monitor remediation sustainability and trend recurring findings to strengthen systemic control effectiveness.


• Prepare and advise executive leadership for audit and regulatory interactions.

Cross-Functional Risk Integration

• Partner closely with Statutory Compliance Team and cross-functional stakeholders to identify, assess, mitigate, manage, and report risks.


• Ensure LMI risks are evaluated with an integrated view of upstream and downstream impacts across LMI.


• Drive continuous improvement in risk governance, reporting, and monitoring practices.


• Influence business leaders to enhance control design and embed proactive risk management into business operations.

Leadership & Influence

• Act as a trusted advisor to senior Finance and business leadership on control strategy and risk mitigation.


• Lead through influence in a matrixed environment without direct authority over all impacted areas.


• Promote a culture of accountability, transparency, and proactive risk identification across the enterprise.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or related field.


• 10+ years of progressive experience in financial controls, risk management, accounting, audit, or regulatory oversight.


• Deep expertise in financial reporting controls, segregation of duties, and governance frameworks.


• Demonstrated experience managing Big Four audit relationships and interacting with regulators.


• Proven ability to identify systemic control weaknesses and implement sustainable remediation strategies.


• Strong executive presence with the ability to influence senior leadership in a complex, matrixed organization.


• Demonstrates strong AI literacy and uses AI-enabled tools to enhance speed, accuracy, and insight generation while maintaining sound judgment and compliance with governance standards.

Preferred:

• CPA, CIA, or equivalent professional certification.


• Experience within the insurance or financial services industry.


• Experience supporting large-scale system implementations or enterprise transformation initiatives.


• Familiarity with SOX or comparable regulatory control environments.

Director-Level Scope & Impact:
