Part-Time Instructional Assistant

Lower Elementary | Kindergarten–Grade 2

The Laurel School is seeking a caring, dependable instructional assistant to support students and the lead teacher in our K–2 Lower Elementary classroom. This position is a good fit for someone who enjoys working with young children, takes initiative, and values a thoughtful, hands-on approach to learning.

• Schedule: Monday–Friday, 9:00 a.m.–1:00 p.m.
• Hours: 20 hours per week
• Pay: $14.00 - $17.00
• Location: The Laurel School, North Chesterfield, Virginia

The Role

The instructional assistant will work alongside the lead teacher to help students participate in lessons, practice developing skills, and build independence. The role includes classroom support, individual and small-group assistance, and supervision during daily routines and activities.

Responsibilities

• Support classroom instruction under the direction of the lead teacher.
• Work with individual students and small groups on reading, writing, math, and other classroom activities.
• Help prepare learning materials and keep classroom spaces organized.
• Reinforce classroom routines, positive behavior, and respectful interactions.
• Assist students with transitions and age-appropriate self-help skills.
• Supervise students during assigned indoor and outdoor activities.
• Share observations about student learning and needs with the lead teacher.
• Maintain student and family confidentiality and follow school safety procedures.

Ideal Candidate

• An associate’s degree or higher is preferred. Candidates without an associate’s degree must have at least three years of experience as an instructional assistant.
• Has experience working with young children in a school, childcare, camp, or similar setting.
• Is patient, attentive, flexible, and dependable.
• Communicates clearly and works well as part of a small team.
• Can follow instructional plans while responding thoughtfully to students’ needs.
• Is comfortable supporting a classroom with students of different ages and learning levels.
• Can consistently work the full Monday–Friday, 9:00 a.m.–1:00 p.m. schedule.
