Shelter Medicine Technician

Independent of supervision in a high-quality, high-volume surgical setting, responsible for monitoring, treatment, and care of patients, including those with potentially life-threatening illness or injury. Under direction of the UC Davis Koret Shelter Medicine Program's Chief of Service, Shelter Medicine Animal Care Clinic Supervisor, provide veterinary technical support to the veterinarians and veterinary students enrolled in the Shelter Medicine and Surgery Rotation at the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine. On a daily basis, independently perform and/or assist students with physical exams, administer anesthesia, monitor anesthesia and recovery, aseptic preparation of patients for various surgical procedures, student instruction, volunteer and staff supervision, clinician support, and facility support.

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position Current California Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) License. No minimum education required. Experience in calculating drug dosages and administering medications intravenously, subcutaneously, intramuscularly or orally. Experience administering a variety of prescribed anesthetic and peri-anesthetic drugs and inducing and maintaining anesthesia in small animal patients. Experience using anesthetic delivery, support, and monitoring equipment, assessing patient status and independently responding to changes. Skill to independently provide intense moment to moment monitoring and reassessment of emergent, critically ill or anesthetized patients. Experience with animal restraint, placing catheters, and venipuncture. Experience working as a technician in a small animal veterinary clinical setting. Interpersonal, oral and written communication skills to interact with a diverse group of students, staff, clinicians and clients and recognize and manage difficult/unpleasant situations and/or individuals.

Preferred Qualifications Experience working in an animal shelter setting and/or experience working in a high-volume surgical setting. Experience providing instruction to staff, students, and/or volunteers. Experience operating common computer database systems used in medical records management. Experience working with Trap-Neuter-Return programs and community cats.

Department Specific Job Scope This position is assigned to the UC Davis Koret Shelter Medicine Student Training Program at the University of California, Davis School of Veterinary Medicine to assist in the support of high-quality, high-volume spay/neuter surgeons, provide instruction of veterinary students and perform maintenance of equipment and the facility.
