General Assignment Reporter

Our family-owned newspaper company is seeking a General Assignment Reporter to join our newsroom in Le Mars, Iowa. Your writing will have a meaningful impact by covering the people, events and issues that matter most to our readers. Additionally, we have opportunities at our other papers across northwest and west central Iowa. Our newsrooms are evolving as our industry changes, yet we remain true to solid reporting that is community focused. We believe in a combination of print and digital. As a General Assignment Reporter, you'll cover a variety of beats, including:

• Local government meetings
• Schools and education
• Community events
• Business and economic development
• Public safety
• Feature stories highlighting the people who make our community unique

You'll interview sources, write accurate and engaging stories on deadline, develop story ideas, take photographs and build relationships throughout the community. The ideal candidate will have:

• Strong writing, interviewing and communication skills
• Excellent organizational and time management abilities
• Curiosity, initiative and sound news judgment
• The ability to work independently while collaborating with the newsroom team
• Basic photography and social media skills are a plus
• A valid driver's license and reliable transportation

A degree in journalism, communications or a related field is preferred, but equivalent experience and a passion for community journalism will also be considered.
