Duties, Responsibilities & Other Upon successful demonstration of required skills and aptitude, candidates will be eligible for more senior positions. Work will be nearby on and around active highways, roadways, and water/land bridge construction. Nighttime shifts can be expected. Inspects and monitors contractual fieldwork, which includes excavations, drainage facilities, concrete placement, steel and precast member erections, soil and aggregate placement, road surfaces, and structures of moderate complexity. Verifies construction of Roadway and Hwy to be in compliance with drawings, VDOT specifications and standards, special provisions and contract documents. Advises contractors of deficiencies, issues, failing tests, non‑compliance and provides reference documents for conclusions. Takes field measurements of materials placed and records production and test results. Performs materials testing such as nuclear gauge soil and aggregate density and performs dense aggregate roller pattern control strips. Reviews placement of and performs materials tests on concrete deliveries in accordance VDOT and ACI standards. Make cylinders for delivery to the labs. Reviews and inspects asphalt and concrete roadways and bridge decks. Reviews and inspects reinforcing steel and forms prior to concrete placement of more complex and non‑routine structures and signs pour cards. Reviews lines, grades, dimensions, and elevations using standard survey and field engineering equipment. Oversees and enforces the installation of erosion/siltation controls and highways work zones and traffic control devices. Prepares daily diaries, inspection check lists and materials testing forms. Receives materials delivery tickets for compliance and submission to contractor. Takes assignments and direction from Quality Control Lead Management and Senior Inspectors. Other duties as assigned to support quality of construction inspection and testing. Tracks deficiencies and nonconformance and their corrective actions; documents in Daily Report. Attends work activity prep meetings and actively participates in kick‑off meetings for work activities. Ability to understand construction plans, specifications, and procedures. Demonstrate basic math skills, including geometry and trigonometry. Possess the ability to read, write, and communicate fluently. Work effectively as a team member and complete daily reports by hand and computer. Education and/or Work Experience Preferred Experience working in a construction related field. Certificates, Licenses, and/or Registrations Required Valid Driver’s License. Ability to pass and maintain required certifications. Pre‑employment drug screening and background check are conditions of employment.
