CUSTODIAN I

JOB SUMMARY

Positions in this class report to the Assistant Director of Maintenance & Operations or designee, and at times may be expected to work independently; maintain a safe and sanitary environment of school facilities and assist with the same on grounds surrounding assigned facilities; may receive guidance from a Head Custodian.


ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Follow an assigned cleaning schedule;
2. Sweep, mop, strip, seal, wax and polish floors;
3. Vacuum and shampoo rugs and carpets;
4. Dust, polish, and wash classroom, and furniture;
5. Clean desks, chalkboards, trays and other classroom instructional equipment;
6. Dust and clean metal work, light fixtures and hardware;
7. Clean restrooms, including doors, mirrors, sinks, walls, floors, toilets and hardware;
8. Clean and fill dispensers and receptacles as needed;
9. Move, arrange and set up furniture and equipment to prepare classrooms, auditoriums or other activity areas for special events, activities or meetings;
10. Clean and make repairs to custodial and maintenance equipment assigned to the school or facility;
11. Conduct light or minor maintenance tasks to keep assigned areas operative, safe and clean;
12. Empty and clean waste receptacles, including trash barrels;
13. Vacuum sweep (or use leaf blower) and pick up trash on walkways, concrete and blacktop surfaces immediately adjacent to the school buildings;
14. Unclog drains, toilets, and urinals;
15. Open up or lock and secure windows, doors and gates;
16. Inspect buildings and grounds for broken equipment and vandalism and report unsafe conditions, needed repairs and maintenance;
17. Assists co-workers for the purpose of providing support in the performance of their work assignments;
18. Deliver supplies as required for the purpose of distributing items to appropriate personnel;
19. Inform designated personnel of needed supplies to ensure availability of items needed to properly perform job.
20. Perform other related duties as assigned.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of:

1. Basic cleaning methods, procedures, and techniques;
2. Use and application of cleaning materials, chemicals and equipment;
3. Basic work practices related to custodial work.

Ability to:

1. Learn and follow established cleaning methods, schedules and procedures;
2. Read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos;
3. Write simple correspondence;
4. Add and subtract two digit numbers and multiply and divide with 10's and 100's.
5. Work around young children and teenagers;
6. Use or learn to use custodial equipment and supplies efficiently, properly and safely;
7. Perform minor non-technical and limited skill repair work independently;
8. Work independently with minimal supervision;
9. Establish and maintain an effective working relationship with those contacted during the course of work.
10. Follow work & safety procedures, written & verbal instructions, and schedules;
11. Respond appropriately to direction and changes in work setting;
12. Organize tasks, set priorities, maintain established pace;
13. Perform repetitive tasks;
14. Manage multiple tasks;
15. Demonstrate good problem-solving skills.
16. Access and use District-adopted web-based systems.

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE

Education: High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and possession of the knowledge and abilities listed above.


Experience: Six months of experience involved with the care and cleaning of buildings and facilities.


REQUIRED LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATES

1. If required to operate a vehicle in the performance of duties, operator must possess a valid California Driver's License;
2. Maintain possession of such valid license during the course of employment;
3. Have an acceptable driving record;
4. Must be insurable at standard rates by District's insurance carrier and maintain such insurability during the course of employment.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS


Physical Demands: Walk (continuously); bend, stoop, reach, push & pull (frequently) to access areas and to operate equipment; lift, up to 25 pounds (frequently), and up to 50 pounds (infrequently); grasp and manipulate tools/ equipment (frequently); use seeing, hearing and speaking.


Working Conditions: Most work performed indoors, some outdoors. Exposure to: electrically and mechanically operated equipment; cleaning agent odors; floor buffer vibration; seasonal outdoor temperatures (30o -120o) and possible exposure to dust, wind, sun and insects. Night custodian may work alone.
