Part-time Circulation Clerk

City of Columbia – Columbia Public Library Location: Columbia Public Library, 106 N. Metter Ave., Columbia, IL 62236 Status: Part-Time, Hourly (Non-Union) Hourly Rate: $15.50 Application Deadline: September 18, 2026 Position Overview The Columbia Public Library seeks a part-time (17-20 hours/week) Shelver/Circulation Clerk. Hours will be days, afternoons, evenings, and Saturdays. Will occasionally be required to work extra hours during staff shortages, programs or special events. Pleasant demeanor, basic computer knowledge, flexible scheduling, and eagerness to help are required. Primary Responsibilities Shelving: Shelve materials in the proper order. Circulating Materials: Check-in and check-out library materials, calculate and collect fines for overdue materials, phone support, patron registration, and general patron assistance. Interlibrary Loan: Use circulation software to locate and request materials from other libraries, retrieve requested materials from our shelves, process items for transit, and check in delivered materials. This includes handling tubs of books that are requested by our patrons or items of ours that have been lent out to other libraries. Once items are routed in, check in materials and notify patrons that that their items have arrived as needed. Patron Accounts: Use library software to assist patrons, including accessing and updating patron accounts. Card Catalog: Assist patrons with usage of electronic card catalog. Technology: Assist patrons with library technology such as usage of computers, Wi‑Fi connectivity, hotspots, printing, copying, faxing, and scanning. Databases: Instruct patrons in the use of all of our electronic databases as well as in the use of ebooks and audio books. Taxes: During tax season, help patrons locate the tax forms they are requesting. Weeding: This process is an ongoing effort to maintain high circulation percentages by eliminating items that are in poor condition and/or have low circulation statistics. Shelf Maintenance: This is a constant duty to try to keep our books in an orderly fashion so that items are easily located and tidy in appearance. Repair Books: This duty includes taping, gluing, recovering or any other repairs needed for a damaged item. Scheduling/Registering: Assist patrons with registering for programs and scheduling the use of the basement for meetings. Programs: Plan, lead or assist as needed with programming for the library, such as Story Time, Tot Time, National Library Week, book clubs, and the Summer Reading Program. Prepare materials for crafts and activities. Hang banners at locations throughout Columbia to advertise programs. Training: Attend continuing education classes online, on‑site and off‑site as needed. Performs other duties of a similar nature as assigned. Minimum Skills/Qualifications Ability to reach top book shelves (approximately 6.5 ft.) with the use of a foot stool Ability to stoop to lower shelves (on floor) Physical stamina to perform the aforementioned tasks for up to eight hours Ability to lift up to 25 pounds Must be 18 years or older High School Diploma or GED Permanent position, not temporary Reliability and flexibility a must Ability to interact professionally and courteously with coworkers, patrons, and supervisors Hourly Rate: $15.50 Leave: Earn 1 hour of paid leave for every 40 hours worked The City of Columbia is an Equal Opportunity Employer and complies with all provisions of the Illinois Equal Pay Act. #J-18808-Ljbffr Columbiaillinois
