Overview Senior Attorney – Personal Injury Litigation (Full‑time, Exempt) Responsible for managing complex litigation cases for the Auto Club Group, including trial preparation, discovery, negotiation, and appeals. Supervisory responsibility is none. The role balances in‑office and remote work, with occasional travel to court and one office visit every 5‑6 weeks. Key Responsibilities Case Analysis and Preparation Analyze, file, and review allegations; provide legal opinions to Claims personnel. Prepare responses to civil complaints and motions; assess feasibility of third‑party defendants. Conduct discovery—depositions, interrogatories, requests for admission; select investigators and serve subpoenas. Review policy documents, medical and technical data; consult with specialists. Determine settlement viability; prepare uninsured/underinsured motorist cases for trial or arbitration. Draft trial briefs, jury instructions, and pre‑trial statements; attend pre‑trial hearings and juror selection. Trial and Defense Develop trial strategy and prepare case for trial. Deliver opening statements, examine witnesses, cross‑examine, and make motions. Prepare closing arguments, trial briefs, and summaries for the Case Evaluation Tribunal. Recommend acceptance of awards or pursuit of trial and appeals to the Appeals Committee. Client Communications and Negotiations Maintain client status updates per office guidelines. Advise on independent counsel for over‑limit judgments. Negotiate pre‑trial settlements; evaluate cost/benefit of litigation activities. Coordinate with co‑counsel and facilitate trial/settlement activity. Legal Advice and Guidance Provide coverage, liability, and damages opinions to Claims personnel. Conduct examinations under oath and participate in the Claims Legal Council Program. Serve on office committees and mentor junior attorneys. Work Environment Primarily remote, reporting to an office roughly once every six weeks; court appearances and other in‑person obligations as needed. Compensation & Benefits Salary: $110,000 – $150,000 annually, with annual bonus potential. Health & Wellness: medical, vision, dental, HSA, prescription drug coverage. Qualifications Education Juris Doctor or graduate of an accredited law school. Licensed in the applicable state (Member of the State Bar). Experience Minimum five (5) years as a licensed attorney in personal injury, no‑fault, or insurance litigation; or Three (3) years as an Associate Attorney at ACG Staff Counsel with yearly performance reviews of “Fully Met Expectations” or higher. Knowledge Civil law, court procedures, rules of evidence, mediation rules. Legal research methods, tort liability law, insurance contract construction and interpretation. Uniform Trade Practices Law, principles of bad faith actions, Michigan Court Rules. Standard jury instructions and drafting non‑standard instructions. Professional ethics in house counsel relationships. Skills & Abilities Effective communication with attorneys, court officers, public, and colleagues. Analytical, organizational, and presentation skills in written and oral forms. Proficiency with litigation management systems and general office software. Preferred Experience Trial experience in first‑party no‑fault or auto insurance defense litigation. Demonstrated defense trial practice through research projects, seminars, and professional organization membership. Participation in Staff Counsel to improve operations and services.
