Located roughly 75 miles northwest of Washington, D.C., and about 85 miles from Baltimore, Maryland, Martinsburg, WV, is among the state's rapidly expanding cities. Our medical center provides a wide array of services, including internal medicine, ambulatory surgery, audiology and speech pathology, dental care, nursing home services, nutrition, podiatry, prosthetics, women's health, mental health, and rehabilitation medicine. We deliver patient care through an integrated primary care model, ensuring that each veteran is assigned to a dedicated team of healthcare professionals who oversee their care both during inpatient stays and outpatient visits.
We are currently seeking a Section Chief of Cardiology, who will report directly to the Chief of Medicine.
Position Overview:This physician will play a crucial role in enhancing the efficiency and productivity of the unit, while maintaining proactive communication with the Medical Staff Department, the Chief of Staff, and other team members to achieve optimal outcomes. Responsibilities include overseeing consultations, evaluating both inpatient and outpatient clinic cases, and interpreting diagnostic tests such as treadmill tests, nuclear scans, echocardiograms, pacemakers, and Holter monitors. The role is divided into 60% clinical duties and 40% administrative tasks.
Key Responsibilities of the Section Chief of Cardiology:- Ensure the efficiency of the Cardiology service, manage patient flow, and improve clinical outcomes in alignment with organizational objectives.
- Exemplify ethical behavior and serve as a positive role model for colleagues at all levels.
- Guarantee that physicians deliver high-quality patient care by evaluating their diagnostic and treatment plans, performance, and documentation of procedures within their privileges.
- Engage in staff evaluations, communication, and counseling.
- Represent the unit's interests in relevant committees.
- Oversee and participate in educational initiatives for inpatient unit staff.
- Revise and develop policies and procedures for inpatient care.
- Address concerns raised through the Joint Patient Safety Reporting (JPSR) program.
- Contribute to personnel, purchasing, and procedural changes within the Medicine department.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the Clinical Service Chief or Chief of Staff.
Recruitment Incentive: May be available.
Salary: Competitive pay, annual performance bonuses, and regular salary increases.
Paid Time Off: 50–55 days of paid leave annually (including 26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid federal holidays, and potentially 5 days for CME).
Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and a federal 401K with contributions up to 5% from the organization.
Insurance: Comprehensive federal health, vision, dental, term life, and long-term care insurance (many plans can be continued into retirement).
Licensure: Must hold one full and unrestricted medical license from any U.S. state or territory.
CME: Possible reimbursement of up to $1,000 per year (must be full-time with board certification).
Malpractice: Liability protection provided at no cost, including tail coverage.
Contract: No employment contract for physicians and no significant restrictions on moonlighting.
Work Schedule: Monday to Friday, 8 AM to 4:30 PM.
To be considered, candidates must meet the following criteria:
- U.S. Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when qualified citizens are unavailable, in accordance with VA policy.
- Board certification is mandatory.
- A Doctor of Medicine degree or an equivalent qualification from an accredited institution recognized by the Department of Veterans Affairs.
- A current, unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. state, territory, or the District of Columbia.
- Completion of residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty program leading to board certification eligibility.
- Proficiency in both spoken and written English.
At least 2 years of demonstrated experience in a physician managerial role is preferred.
