Job Title: Registered Nurse - Emergency Room Profession: RN (Registered Nurse) Specialty: Emergency Room Duration: 13 weeks Shift: 12-Hour Day Hours per Shift: 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Experience: Minimum 2 years License: WA or Compact License Certifications: ACLS, BLS, TNCC, PALS or ENPC Must-Have: Will accept a traveler with 1 year of experience in a larger trauma setting. Description: The unit features a total of 56 beds, which can accommodate 60-70 patients when hall beds are included. There is a Fast Track area with 6 beds. A separate triage area is available with 5 beds, and travelers can take a triage test for potential assignment, although generally, department staff will be assigned. There are 18 designated beds within the Emergency Department for holding inpatients awaiting bed placement. Emergency Room RNs manage their own ER holds, although inpatient RNs may float to the Emergency Department to take on inpatient assignments. There are separate psych and seclusion rooms available, including a locked hall with 6 private treatment rooms. In-house security is present. The patient volume averages approximately 170-200 patients per day. Staffing ratios are 1:3 for higher acuity patients and 1:4 for lower acuity patients. Common diagnoses and types of patients include cardiac issues, stroke, sepsis, DKA, altered mental status, respiratory problems, abdominal pain, and mental health cases. ED technicians conduct EKGs while respiratory therapists manage equipment such as vents, CPAP, and BiPAP. Respiratory therapists also complete arterial blood gas assessments. Monitor technicians are available, and RNs are responsible for reading EKG strips. Radiology services, including X-ray and CT, are located adjacent to the Emergency Department, with transport services available to assist in patient movement. Phlebotomy duties are primarily handled by nurses or ED technicians, with lab assistance for difficult draws. Weekend shifts are required every other week. Holiday work is mandatory for November and December, with consideration for one holiday off if it does not conflict with unit demands. There is no call or standby requirement, although extra shifts are available. The dress code is professional colors. There is a specific orientation that lasts for 1 day focusing on policies, education, and training, followed by a second day of department-specific orientation. No requests for time off will be considered during the first full week of an assignment. The facility may cancel up to 4 shifts during a 13-week assignment. The charting system used is EPIC. A BSN is not required for this position.
