Staff AI/Agentic Engineer

Abbott seeks a Staff AI/Agentic Engineer to lead technical design of production multi-agent systems and set engineering standards across the AI team. This senior individual-contributor role requires deep expertise in agentic architectures, distributed systems, and LLM applications, with responsibility for reliability, evaluation strategy, and mentoring junior engineers.

Responsibilities

• Lead design and implementation of complex multi-agent systems with supervisor, planner/executor, and coordination patterns
• Set standards for durable workflow design including state management, checkpoints, replay, and human-in-the-loop patterns
• Drive context engineering and retrieval strategy: chunking, indexing, memory hierarchies, and context-window budgeting
• Design evaluation systems, curate datasets, define success metrics, and establish regression gates in CI and online evaluation
• Own production reliability for high-complexity agentic systems: latency optimization, rate-limiting, graceful degradation, and incident response

Requirements

• 7–10 years software engineering experience with distributed, API-driven, or workflow-intensive production systems
• Hands-on production experience designing, coding, and operating agentic or LLM-based applications at scale
• Deep knowledge of agent architecture, multi-agent coordination, context engineering, retrieval, evaluation, and safety controls
• Strong Python proficiency and TypeScript, Go, or Java; distributed systems and secure SDLC expertise
• Experience defining and using measurable quality, safety, reliability, latency, and cost metrics
• Bachelor's degree in related field or equivalent professional experience
• Demonstrated ability to drive technical decisions autonomously and influence engineers outside reporting line

Compensation: $113,300–$226,700 base
