Purpose: Assist the head wrestling coach with all coaching responsibilities, the safety of all students, and to represent Canon City Schools in a professional and respectful manner. CPR and Concussion certificates.

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:

All coaches of interscholastic activity programs who assume full responsibility for students under their direction at any level shall be either:

  • A certified teacher or administrator holding a current certificate issued by the Colorado Department of Education; or
  • Employed as a teacher, counselor, and or administrator at least 50% of the school day in a private school; or
  • A registered volunteer with Canon City Schools.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND EXPECTATIONS

COACHES' PROFESSIONAL AND PERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS AND EXPECTATIONS:

  1. Rapport
A coach must be able to develop good rapport with numerous individuals and community groups: team personnel, the student body, the professional staff (faculty, administration, maintenance, etc.), the community as a whole, spectators, officials, fellow coaches in the conference, media representatives, and the parents of their players. Good rapport and demonstrated competency are invaluable for the coach.
  2. Cooperation
The district and school expect the highest level of cooperation by all coaches and athletic staff members in the execution of their duties. Coaches must work cooperatively with their school athletic director, administration, other staff, team, and parents.
  3. Leadership and Public Relations
Diligence, enthusiasm, integrity, honesty, and a passion for the game are all essential components of the professional pride that any coach should embody. Personal appearance, including dress (to include proper coaching attire and shoes), physical condition, and other relevant factors, should be exemplary. The public demeanor and decorum of the coach, team, athletic department, school, and community should always reflect positively.
  4. Discipline
Every athletic team requires a high level of discipline among coaches, players, and support staff. In this regard, the implementation of discipline and the attitude with which it is implemented are the coach's responsibility. Individually, the coach becomes a model of all that the program represents-observing school codes, rules of the game, and ideals of good sportsmanship, as well as monitoring participants' behavior throughout the season, especially regarding the student body. Desire to do well, to win gracefully, and to lose with poise and a positive attitude should be emphasized. Staff, players, and spectators should be motivated to achieve both established team goals and individual goals.
  5. Improvement
All coaches must constantly take advantage of opportunities presented for self-improvement. Regular attendance at district meetings, rules clinics, special workshops, and training opportunities in specific fields is imperative. Membership should be maintained in professional organizations, coaches' associations, and similar groups whose programs are geared toward achieving greater success and improving performance. Keeping abreast of current literature in professional journals, newspapers, and magazines, as well as using enrichment materials available in other media, is also expected.
COACHING TECHNIQUES:
  1. Use sound and acceptable teaching practices.
  2. Run well-organized practice sessions.
  3. Complete pre-season planning well in advance of the starting date.
  4. Adhere to a highly efficient and technically sound program of injury prevention. When injuries occur, follow a prescribed routine and maintain good communication with the patient, trainer, and parents.
  5. Construct a well-organized game plan.
  6. Develop a sound system for equipment accountability.
  7. Keep assistant coaches, volunteers, student managers, and statisticians well-informed about their expectations.
  8. Cooperate fully with building staff, other programs, media, support staff, administration, etc.
  9. Cooperate fully with maintenance staff, transportation, and other individuals involved in supporting the program.
COACHES' RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. To the players on the team
The coach must promote and teach only ethical, aggressive, and fair play, while stressing good sportsmanship at all times.

The coach shall be responsible not only for teaching skills and techniques pertinent to the sport, but also for modeling and monitoring behavior and academic performance on an ongoing basis.

It shall be the responsibility of the coach to aid in the development of the overall person.

The coach should be fair and unbiased with players, and sensitive to individual differences, needs, interests, temperaments, attitudes, and tolerances.
  2. To the school and district
A coach has high visibility in the community and may have a significant impact on the athlete, their home, the workplace, and community organizations. A coach's actions should constantly be geared toward creating confidence in the coach, the school, and the district.

A coach owes their school maximal effort and loyalty at all times. They must constantly strive for excellence throughout the program, department, and school.

A coach should treat the faculty, staff, and student body with dignity and respect.

A coach should give support to all endorsed activities of the school.

A coach should, at every opportunity, urge the student body to be polite, courteous, and fair to all people involved in a contest.

The coach should maintain high levels of discipline and expectations, being firm, fair, and consistent in enforcing them.
  3. To the profession
A coach at Canon City Schools should continue to pursue professional growth in both academic teaching and athletic coaching areas. The coach should participate in professional growth opportunities whenever possible.
  4. To fellow coaches
Although the head coach must assume leadership responsibilities, independent thought among all assistant coaches should be encouraged, and clear lines of communication should be established to facilitate the exchange of ideas.

Disagreements with fellow coaches should be discussed privately and in a timely manner.

The head coach should expect all staff to contribute a full measure of time, effort, thought, and energy to the program. Expectations should be communicated clearly in advance of the season. Assistant coaches should be valued and recognized appropriately for their contributions to the program's success.

Assistant coaches should have a strong sense of allegiance to the program. They must be willing and able to do things they may not wish to do, or even like. They must fulfill their responsibility to the head coach, the athletes, and the sport itself. They must be willing to put in a full measure of time, effort, thought, and energy into the program and the head coach.
  5. To other coaches in the athletic program
A coach must bear in mind that their sport is part of the total athletic educational program of Canon City Schools. Therefore, it is essential to support, promote, and collaborate with all other coaches and activity sponsors to ensure the overall well-being of the program.

Coaches should communicate regularly with athletes and their families about off-season schedules to allow athletes to participate in a wide variety of activities.

A coach should support and cooperate with other coaches whenever possible. All remarks should reflect confidence in one's fellow coaches. A strong, harmonious interpersonal relationship must exist among coaches and other faculty members.
  6. To faculty members
A coach is expected to cooperate with every faculty member. If the coach collaborates with academic subject teachers by allowing an athlete to make up a test or homework during practice time, respect for the athletic program, the coaching staff, and the values of athletics will be significantly enhanced.
  7. To the physical plant
    Each coach is responsible for:
Maintaining the practice area and locker rooms in a clean and orderly state.
Storing equipment and using equipment properly.
Keeping locker rooms and storage areas locked.
Filing proper maintenance requests for large items of need.
Pride in the equipment and facilities is of primary importance to all athletes, coaches, and the community.
