Underwriter II, USDA Generalist

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Underwriter II, USDA Generalist based in the United States.

This role is responsible for evaluating and underwriting a broad range of lending opportunities while maintaining sound credit risk and appropriate risk-return outcomes.
You’ll manage transactions from initial review and due diligence through approval, funding, and closing.
The position combines detailed financial analysis with direct collaboration across business development and client-facing teams.
You’ll assess borrower financials, cash flow, collateral, credit information, and overall business performance to support informed lending decisions.
You’ll also help clients understand requirements, facilitate smooth closings, and transition completed relationships effectively.
As an experienced underwriting professional, you’ll have opportunities to mentor analysts and less experienced colleagues while contributing your credit expertise.
This is a remote opportunity suited to a thoughtful, collaborative professional who can balance speed, sound judgment, customer focus, and credit discipline.

Accountabilities

• Underwrite a broad spectrum of lending products, regardless of transaction size or complexity, while applying established credit policies and minimum underwriting standards.
• Review new deal packages for accuracy, completeness, and overall credit quality, conduct initial prospect interviews, and identify additional information or due diligence requirements.
• Order, review, and interpret financial and business due diligence, including financial statement spreads, cash flows, field examinations, collateral information, and relevant debtor credit data.
• Develop a thorough understanding of each prospect’s business, operating model, asset conversion cycle, financial position, and associated credit risks.
• Collaborate closely with Business Development Officers to provide consultative credit guidance before proposal issuance and throughout the transaction process.
• Prepare clear and comprehensive credit narratives for appropriate approval, documenting relevant risks, mitigants, financial trends, and underwriting conclusions.
• Conduct and document pre-funding activities while overseeing the work of assigned Client Analysts to ensure transactions are prepared accurately and efficiently.
• Coordinate closing documentation, negotiate effectively with prospects, and facilitate the booking of new loans in accordance with established requirements.
• Explain requirements and responsibilities clearly to customers while maintaining a high-quality client experience throughout the lending process.
• Review client reporting requirements and processing procedures and ensure appropriate documentation is in place.
• Visit prospect locations and meet with business management before closing for transactions above established thresholds.
• Support a smooth transition from underwriting and closing to Account Executives and ongoing relationship management.
• Mentor and train analysts, field examiners, and less experienced business development professionals, sharing credit expertise and best practices.
• Perform additional responsibilities as needed to support lending and business objectives.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and relevant professional experience.
• At least 3 years of relevant experience in commercial lending, credit underwriting, financial analysis, or a related field.
• Strong ability to analyze financial statements, cash flows, collateral, credit information, and business performance to evaluate lending risk.
• Working knowledge of credit policies, underwriting standards, due diligence, loan documentation, and pre-funding processes.
• Strong business acumen and the ability to understand a borrower’s business model, operating environment, and asset conversion cycle.
• Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with sound judgment when evaluating transactions of varying size and complexity.
• Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to explain credit decisions, requirements, and recommendations clearly to internal and external stakeholders.
• Demonstrated customer focus and ability to provide consultative, value-added guidance throughout the lending process.
• Strong collaboration and relationship-building skills, particularly when working with business development and other cross-functional teams.
• Effective negotiation skills and the confidence to work directly with prospects and clients on transaction requirements and closing documentation.
• Ability to manage multiple transactions and priorities efficiently while maintaining accuracy, timeliness, and attention to detail.
• Leadership mindset with the ability to mentor and develop analysts and less experienced colleagues.

• Base salary: $72,000–$120,000 USD, with individual compensation determined by experience, qualifications, skills, and location.
