Safety Officer

Build Your Career with Liesfeld Contractor We are seeking an experienced Safety Officer to support safe, compliant, and productive operations across our active construction sites. This role serves as a visible field safety presence, working closely with Project Managers, Superintendents, Foremen, and crews to identify hazards, reinforce safe work practices, conduct training and inspections, investigate incidents, and ensure compliance with OSHA regulations and company safety standards. The ideal candidate will be a proactive safety professional who can effectively communicate, coach, and influence employees while identifying and addressing potential risks before they result in incidents. Schedule Full-time | Monday–Saturday Monday–Friday: 6:00 AM–5:30 PM| Saturday: 6:00 AM–3:30 PM| Average 58+ hours per week *schedule may vary based on operational needs, emergency repairs, and field demands* Key Responsibilities Conduct routine jobsite safety inspections, audits, and observations; document findings and corrective actions Identify and address unsafe conditions and behaviors and follow up to ensure corrective actions are completed Coach field personnel and reinforce safe work practices, company policies, and OSHA requirements Conduct new-hire and subcontractor safety orientations and assist with ongoing safety training Monitor safety-critical work and verify required permits, procedures, PPE, and controls are in place Investigate incidents and near misses; document findings and assist with corrective actions Partner with Project Managers, Superintendents, Foremen, and crews to maintain compliance with local, state, and federal safety requirements Promote a proactive safety culture, accountability, and continuous improvement across all projects Maintain accurate safety documentation, inspection records, training records, and reports Travel between active jobsites throughout the Greater Richmond area as needed Required Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Construction Safety, Safety Management, or a related field, with at least one (1) year of heavy civil construction safety experience; OR Safety certification such as STS-C (Safety Trained Supervisor – Construction), CHST (Construction Health and Safety Technician), or CSP (Certified Safety Professional), with at least three (3) years of heavy civil construction experience; OR At least five (5) years of heavy civil construction safety experience OSHA 30-Hour Construction Safety certification Strong working knowledge of OSHA and applicable federal, state, and local construction safety requirements Strong communication, observation, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills Ability to coach, influence, and hold field personnel accountable for safe work practices Ability to work independently, prioritize multiple responsibilities, and exercise sound judgment in a fast-paced field environment Dependable, professional, and comfortable working directly with Project Managers, Superintendents, Foremen, and field crews Valid Virginia driver's license with a clean driving record Legally authorized to work in the United States Preferred Qualifications OSHA 510 and/or OSHA 500 certification Bilingual skills, particularly English/Spanish Experience conducting incident and near-miss investigations Experience leading safety training, orientations, and toolbox talks Familiarity with PTP/JHA processes, excavation and utility safety, permitting, and construction safety documentation Experience working in heavy civil, site development, utility, excavation, or similar construction environments Physical Requirements Ability to work on active construction sites in varying weather, noise, dust, and terrain conditions Ability to stand, walk, climb, bend, kneel, and navigate uneven ground, slopes, trenches, ladders, and stairs Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds occasionally Ability to visually identify hazards and read safety documentation Ability to wear required PPE throughout the workday Ability to travel between jobsites as needed Why Join Us Full-time position with a respected family-owned contractor serving the Greater Richmond region for over 50 years Lead safety efforts across heavy civil and construction projects Work alongside experienced Project Managers, Superintendents, and field crews Opportunities for career growth and professional development Team-oriented culture focused on safety, quality, and professionalism Competitive salary based on experience Health, dental, and vision benefits Disability and life insurance 401k retirement plan with employer match Employee recognition and perk programs Paid time off and paid holidaysOpportunities for career advancement and professional development Supportive, team-oriented work environment Liesfeld Contractor is committed to creating a safe and supportive workplace for all employees. #J-18808-Ljbffr
