GENERAL SUMMARY

The Town of Littleton is seeking qualified applicants for a 6 hours/week Library Assistant position in the Reuben Hoar Library. Responsibilities include the circulation of materials to and from the public through integrated library system transactions. Ready reference and reader's advisory skills required. While primarily responsible for working at the main circulation desk, must be willing to work with all departments (Children's, YA, and Adult) as the need arises. Nights and some Saturdays required. Successful candidates will have a High-School Degree; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Background in automated library circulation and technical procedures, familiarity with the Dewey Decimal System, excellent customer service skills, and general knowledge of computers and the internet desired but we are willing to train. Some heavy lifting (30-50 lbs) may be required. Ability to lift and shelve books in high and low places. Position will be subject to a thorough background check. This is a Grade 4 non-benefit-eligible position for 6 hours per week, a non-exempt position classified under the Town's Classification and Compensation Plan. Anticipated hiring range: is $23.33- $29.14 per hour in ten steps. Mandatory Saturday work hours are expected. FULL JOB DESCRIPTION

Position Purpose: Responsibilities for assisting, checking materials in and out, renewing materials, collecting and recording fees and fines, issuing library cards and entering patron data, answering main desk telephone, retrieving items for paging list (reserve requests), notifying patrons regarding reserved materials availability. Provides direct circulation staffing on the Circulation Desk, including data entry work, patron assistance, and circulation delivery via integrated library system. Serves as initial point of public contact within the facility, providing both in-person and telephone primary interface with the public. Provides initial directional and informational assistance within the facility. Responsible for shelving library materials; performs all other related work as required Supervision: Supervision Scope: Performs routine duties requiring the exercise of basic judgment and initiative to complete assigned tasks. Supervision Received: Daily work functions are directed by the Senior Librarian; required to refer all questionable cases to supervisor. Supervised by Library Director. Supervision Given: None. Job Environment: Work is performed under typical library conditions. Library operating hours may require evening and weekend work. Operates computer, telephone, copier, and other standard office equipment. Has frequent contact and communications with library patrons. Has access to confidential patron records. Errors could result in reduced levels of library service and poor public relations. Provides and engages in some of the integrated library system transactions: check-in and checkout of library print and non-print materials, renewals and holds, network transfers, reservations for museum passes, and interlibrary (ILL) requests. Shelves library print and non-print materials in the proper positions. Schedules meeting rooms when necessary using library meeting room policies. Ensures that monies have proper receipts issued and are directed to appropriate depositories in Administration or Head of Circulation for forwarding to a member library. Responsible for preparing the Library for patron use by following opening and closing procedures. Serves as an initial point of public contact within the facility, providing both in-person and telephone interface with the public. Performs similar or related work as required. Recommended Minimum Qualifications : Education. Training and Experience : High School Education or GED; familiar with computers, in a library, or in a public service position helpful; or any equivalent combination of education and up to one year of experience preferably in a library or public service position. Knowledge. Ability and Skill : Knowledge: Working knowledge of public library operations and functions helpful. Ability: Ability to communicate effectively with the all members of the public in a courteous and tactful manner. Ability to understand and follow instructions and to work independently when required. Ability to file alphabetically and numerically. Ability to operate a computer and other standard office equipment. Interest in reading helpful. Skills: Skill in all of the above listed tools and equipment. Excellent customer service skills. A high level of patience.
