Spanish Medical Interpreter

Job Description Coordinates and delivers both interpretation (oral) and translation (written) services for individuals with limited English proficiency across all Intermountain Health facilities and virtual services. Application Requirements Applicants must upload a current resume that clearly reflects interpreting experience, employment history, and any relevant certifications supporting their qualifications. Schedule and Shift Saturday and Sunday, 6:00 AM – 6:30 PM (Part Time, 24 hours per week). Essential Functions Interpret medical and general information with the highest degree of accuracy and completeness in consecutive, simultaneous, and sight translation modes for patients, families, and Intermountain Health staff, using appropriate communication methods according to the individual’s developmental age and mental condition. Interpret complex medical information, demonstrating expert knowledge of medical terminology and the healthcare system. Act as a cultural mediator, demonstrating cultural sensitivity and superior intercultural communication skills. Render unbiased interpretation to ensure accurate exchange of information in the proper cultural context. Adhere to the National Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice for Healthcare Interpreters, demonstrating knowledge of HIPAA, Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, Title III of the Americans with Disabilities Act, and Section 1557 of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. Manage time productively, displaying a proactive approach to the job. Respond to requests in a timely manner and provide staff with an estimated time of arrival for interpretation assignments. Refer staff to phone or video interpretation per guidelines. Use computer, software, and electronic tools for research, data entry, and other communication purposes within the work environment. Maintain accurate and complete records of all interpretation events. Ensure data across multiple platforms or sources is consistent and accurate. Translate written material into one or more languages, ensuring meaning, context, and localization are maintained. Complete assignments in a timely manner and with a high degree of accuracy. Saturday and Sunday, 6:00 AM – 6:30 PM Location: Intermountain Medical Center, Murray, Utah Required Qualifications Successful completion of a pre‑hire skills assessment. Excellent oral and written command of both source and target language(s) to obtain a “Professional Proficiency” or Level 3 in the ILR scale (or equivalent as approved by Manager), including specialized healthcare terminology. Perform consecutive, simultaneous, and sight translation with a high degree of accuracy in both languages. Demonstrate ability to work effectively in a fast‑paced, high‑pressure environment. Demonstrate ability to prioritize and multi‑task. Demonstrate interpersonal verbal and written communication skills to function as part of a team and the flexibility and good judgment to work independently. Certificate of completion from a 40‑hr. Professional Medical Interpreter course. Additional Considerations For candidates who do not meet the Professional Medical Interpreter course requirement, you may be considered if you meet one of the following qualifications (if hired, the 40‑hr. course must be completed on your own within six months): Hold an interpreting certification in a different field (e.g., court). Hold a college degree in translation or a working language. Have 2 years of experience as a professional interpreter. Preferred Qualifications Two years of experience working as an interpreter in healthcare settings. Bachelor’s Degree in Interpretation or Translation, Languages, or Communications. National certification as a Healthcare or Medical Interpreter from either CCHI or NBCMI; in Utah: State Certified Medical Language Interpreter License by DOPL. Completion of a college‑level medical terminology course. Knowledge of EPIC. Physical Requirements Ongoing need to see and read information, labels, documents, monitors, identify equipment and supplies, and assess customer needs. Frequent interactions with providers, colleagues, customers, patients/clients and visitors that require verbal communication as well as hearing and understanding spoken information, needs, and issues quickly and accurately. Manual dexterity to manipulate complex and delicate supplies and equipment with precision and accuracy, including frequent computer use for typing and accessing needed information. For roles requiring driving: Expected to drive a vehicle which requires sitting, seeing and reading signs, traffic signals, and other vehicles. Location Intermountain Health Intermountain Medical Center, Murray, Utah. Compensation and Benefits Hourly pay range: $22.98 – $35.00, depending on experience.
