School Bus Driver

Terms of Employment: Salary and benefits shall be paid according to the system's approved salary schedule. Length of work year and hours of employment shall be those established by the system. An employee who is eligible to participate in the Public School Employees Retirement System and who works at least 24 hours a week (17.5 for bus drivers) will be eligible for health insurance. Any non-Teacher Retirement System (TRS) eligible employee will have a FICA deduction.

Qualifications

Valid Georgia Class "B" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with passenger endorsement, air brake endorsement, "S" endorsement, and verification of an acceptable seven (7) years driving record through the Department of Driver Services. Successful completion of driver's training course meeting state and federal standards. Ability to pass an initial drug test, as well as future random drug/alcohol tests. Minimum age of 18. Must pass Department of Education physical exam by Georgia physician prior to driving. High School Diploma preferred.

Knowledge of highway and traffic safety. Ability to operate light and/or heavy-duty buses in a safe and economical way. Ability to understand and carry out both written and oral directions. Ability to exercise appropriate disciplinary techniques. Ability to follow a daily routing schedule. Ability to relate and communicate effectively with parents, students, and school personnel. Ability to tolerate highly stressful situations.

Performance Responsibilities

Maintains current knowledge of all local and state traffic laws as related to school bus transportation. Obeys all local and state traffic laws as related to school bus transportation. Maintains current driver's license. Maintains an acceptable Motor Vehicle Record. Follows scheduled bus transportation route. Ensures students arrive at school and at their home bus stop on schedule. Maintains knowledge of emergency procedures and implements them if these situations occur. Reads all literature on school bus safety distributed by the Department of Transportation. Develops and submits all required transportation reports, such as, number of students transported, mileage, number of stops, school bus accidents, student injuries, and others when requested. Assists other school bus drivers as needed. Monitors the school bus radio in order to be informed of emergency situations. Secures appropriate emergency assistance if/or when the school bus should become disabled. Reports any potential school bus mechanical problems that may develop while bus is in operation. Maintains flexibility when asked to drive a different or additional route. Maintains knowledge of different bus routes. Attends scheduled meetings and training classes. Performs inspection of the assigned bus before and after transporting students to and from school and on special activities. Reports all bus mechanical problems to Bus Shop Foreman and Transportation Supervisor. Maintains adequate fuel in the assigned bus. Parks bus as directed at the end of day. Inspects the interior of the bus after each trip for lost articles and sleeping children. Monitors proper loading and unloading of students. Communicates student rules of behavior. Enforces student disciplinary procedures. Completes student disciplinary forms as necessary and notifies Transportation Supervisor of potential disciplinary problems. Makes proper arrangements for student with special needs. Recognizes all regular student bus passengers. Conducts two emergency evacuation drills each year. Maintains proper fluid levels in bus. Completes CPR, First Aid, and other trainings as requested. Cleans assigned bus inside and outside on a regular basis as directed. Performs other tasks consistent with goals and objectives that support the vision and mission of the Elbert County School System. Performs other duties as assigned. Regularly, predictably and reliably at work. Ability to be present at the physical work site. Meets the certification requirements of the school system. Constant or consistent ability to supervise and manage students.

Physical Requirements

Heavy Work: Exerting 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Board Policy GCRA(1): Drug Screening of Bus Drivers

The Board of Education is dedicated to providing safe and efficient transportation for students transported on school buses. The Board recognizes that safe student transportation depends on unimpaired judgment, physical dexterity, reflex action, and unimpaired senses of sight and hearing, of employees in safety-sensitive functions. The goal of this Board is to provide our employees and students with an environment that promotes health and safety.

In order to meet this goal, we hereby endorse the U.S. Department of Transportation, Federal Highway Administration's anti-alcohol and controlled substances policies and regulations. This Board will not tolerate unauthorized use, abuse, possession or sale of alcohol or controlled substances by its employees. Operating a school bus or other commercial vehicle requires a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and is considered a safety-sensitive function. Individuals who are employed by the Board of Education to operate safety sensitive vehicles include, but are not limited to: mechanics, school bus drivers, substitute school bus drivers, maintenance workers, coaches, teachers, and administrators. The Board shall require testing for alcohol and controlled substances by employees engaged in safety sensitive functions in accordance with state and federal law, which shall include pre-employment, post-accident, random, follow-up and reasonable suspicion testing.

Individuals who have positive controlled substance test results shall be terminated, as shall individuals whose test results reveal blood alcohol concentrations 0.04 and above and individuals who refuse to submit to a required alcohol or controlled substance test. Individuals whose test results reveal blood alcohol concentrations of at least 0.02, but less than 0.04, and individuals who engage in other conduct prohibited by the regulations may, in the Board of Education's discretion, be terminated.

Drivers must inform their immediate supervisor of any therapeutic drug use, whether by prescription or "over the counter", and must provide a statement from their treating physician that the substance does not adversely affect the driver's ability to operate the bus.
