Communications Writer & Digital Content Specialist

Job Description Employment Duration: 1 year (w/ potential for extension) The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences is seeking a Writer to support and strengthen the Department’s digital and print communications efforts. Reporting to the Director of Communications, the Writer collaborates with a wide range of stakeholders and content providers across the Department to present information in a clear, efficient, and audience‑friendly manner. The Writer composes and edits a variety of comprehensive and technical materials with attention to stylistic consistency, organization, readability, and accuracy for lay audiences on matters related to mental health and neuroscience. Responsibilities include conducting background research, selecting and interviewing sources, ensuring factual accuracy, and coordinating the production of online and print communications materials. The role also supports updates to internal and external websites and social media channels to reflect departmental research, clinical, educational, and public service activities. Responsibilities Research, write, and edit materials for a variety of publications intended for internal and external audiences. Produce articles, press releases, profiles, briefings, blogs, website copy, collateral materials, and other written communications. Conduct independent research, select interview sources, and ensure the accuracy of written content. Obtain copyright permissions as needed. Edit written materials to ensure clarity, organization, accuracy, consistency, and quality. Perform updates to content on department public and internal websites. Plan and execute social media content to highlight departmental initiatives and achievements. Required Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in a related area and/or equivalent experience or training. Thorough knowledge of writing fundamentals, including grammar, syntax, style, and punctuation. Thorough knowledge of editorial style and publication guidelines. Demonstrated ability to write clear, engaging, and audience‑appropriate content in a variety of styles while maintaining alignment with organizational messaging. Knowledge of computer applications for publishing, image handling, and/or web production. Strong research and fact verification skills. Strong interpersonal communication and collaboration skills. Strong analytical and critical thinking skills. Excellent attention to detail, organizational, and project management skills. Ability to maintain confidentiality. Preferred Qualifications Knowledge of UCSF, including its mission, goals, programs, achievements, and policies. Knowledge of higher education, health sciences, or a related academic or clinical field. Familiarity with website content management systems such as Drupal or WordPress. Salary Information The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy. Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF.
