Medical Technologist (PRN)

Job Description The Medical Technologist performs testing on patient specimens for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes and reports the results. Responsibilities also include performing quality control procedures and instrumentation maintenance. The technologist assists the laboratory manager in maintaining an efficient and effective laboratory operation. The position requires exercise of independent judgment and discretion. Work Schedule This PRN Medical Technologist is day shift to cover for vacations or leaves. The role will primarily work at our Kenmoor location and may cover Big Rapids, Holland, and Muskegon clinics as needed. No weekends or holidays. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Performs assigned technical assays according to established procedures and reports tests after verifying the validity of patient results prior to reporting. Prepares specimens for analysis and performs testing while maintaining the highest quality and efficient use of resources. Maintains all equipment according to the maintenance schedule and records function checks; takes remedial action when indicated. Performs and records quality control and proficiency tests, taking appropriate corrective action when QC fails. Properly collects patient specimens, including preparation, labeling, handling, and transportation. Maintains knowledge of current developments in the laboratory field by attending job‑related seminars or reading appropriate journals. Communicates and interacts with peers and other departments in a manner that has a positive effect on patient services and staff morale. Interacts effectively with patients, family members, and other stakeholders, demonstrating sensitivity to cultural diversity, age‑specific needs, and confidentiality. Functions as a team member, expanding responsibilities as directed by management to facilitate optimal workflow within the cancer center. Other Duties Job duties may change at any time with or without notice. Job Requirements Education: Bachelor of Science degree and successful completion of a medical technologist internship. Must pass the registry exam and hold current certification (ASCP or equivalent). Experience: Two years of related work experience preferred. Knowledge and Skills: Chemistry and hematology instrumentation, laboratory information system (LIS) proficiency, mathematical calculations, clear color vision, microscope operation, ability to lift up to 50 pounds, prioritization and organization, tolerance of standing 90% of the workday, efficiency under tight deadlines and high volume, excellent phlebotomy skills, yearly competency maintenance, effective written and verbal communication, and compliance with CLIA regulations. Preferred Knowledge/Skills/Abilities Two years of related work experience preferred. Excellent people skills a plus. Self‑motivated with willingness to accept and make changes. Work Environment High‑stress, stat‑based clinical laboratory work setting. Exposure to blood/body fluids and a variety of infectious diseases. Occasional exposure to toxic or irritating chemicals and noxious odors. Interaction with varied personality types and challenging patient population for venipunctures.
