Staff Counselor

The Staff Counselor (SC) will provide counseling to the students at Geneva College that reflects the mission and Christian perspective of the College. The SC will serve as one of the primary care providers for the College regarding mental health and will intervene in crisis situations, work with the Student Development staff to coordinate services, and execute educational programs and training to address student needs. Work Calendar: This position is a 10-month position, that will work from August to May.

Essential Responsibilities

1. Provide professional counseling to undergraduate Geneva students.
2. Provide consultation and referral to graduate students, staff, and faculty as time allows.
3. Provide consultation to College personnel and student leaders.
4. Provide crisis intervention services, including rotating weekend on call emergency coverage.
5. Develop, execute, and assess monthly mental health programs.
6. Develop a referral network of area services and facilitate referrals to other counseling professionals as needed.
7. Develop, execute, and evaluate group counseling opportunities.
8. Consistently pursue learning and development of counseling best practices.

• Keep appropriate client records and statistics.
• Supervise student interns when the Director is out of the office to include training, planning, assigning/directing work, coaching, evaluating performance, affirming, disciplining, addressing complaints, and resolving problems.
• Must have a mindset of mentoring student interns under supervision. Should be able to lead in a way that sets a good example, promotes teamwork, and encourages a positive, efficient work environment.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
• Assist the Director with the creation and managing of social media content and event planning.

2. Must be able to perform the following: talking, hearing, and seeing. Must have sufficient manual dexterity to be able to operate all office equipment including, but not limited to computers, printers, copiers, scanners, and telephones.
3. Individuals must recognize that management of data, including personal information, grades, budgets, programs, and policies is necessary to the operation of the College. Such information must be kept private and confidential for the protection of the College and to obey Federal and/or State laws. 4. Must be able to reason, analyze, prioritize, conceptualize, make judgments, and solve problems.

Qualifications:

1. Minimum:
   • Education/Certification: Master's in social work (MSW), counseling (MA) or counselor related field.
   • Experience: Minimum of three years counseling and administrative experience and experience with college students and/or in higher education.
   • Skill/Abilities: Ability to counsel the college age population, to integrate professional practice from a Christian world view, to intervene, evaluate, and serve students in times of crisis, and to work with students, families, and College administrators.
   • Christian Commitment: An eligible candidate must be a thoughtful and articulate Christian and an active member of a Protestant evangelical Christian church. Preference will be given to the candidate who supports and has an articulate understanding of the Reformed faith. An eligible candidate must understand and support the College's "Foundational Concepts of Christian Education" by expressing an evangelical Christian profession of faith and demonstrate the ability to integrate a Christian perspective in their work.
2. Preferred:
   • Education/Certification: Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC).
