Anesthesia Technician II

Job Description The Anesthesia Technician II position assists the anesthesia provider in the safe and organized delivery of patient care to pediatric surgical patients. The technician prepares equipment and work areas in all anesthetizing locations, sets up, operates, and maintains monitoring and anesthesia equipment to support complex cases, including cardiac and trauma. The role is responsible for maintaining supplies and equipment, stocking anesthesia supplies in carts at the point of care, and supporting the anesthesiologist, anesthesia assistants, and anesthesia trainees in various anesthesia locations. The technician may also provide patient transport and environmental service support as needed. Responsibilities Maintain and organize the anesthesia environment and supplies. Prepare operating room and off‑site locations for procedures, including setting up, calibrating, and ensuring integrity of monitoring devices and airway equipment. Track and return specialized equipment, such as ultrasound machines, to central locations. Consult operating‑room schedule and anesthesia team to determine equipment needs for all procedures and troubleshoot as needed. Assist the anesthesiologist in establishing, monitoring, intubation, extubation, and arterial cannulation; set up hotlines, humidified circuits, and apply concepts of difficult airway management. Assemble, clean, and stock anesthesia equipment before and after procedures; troubleshoot the anesthesia machine and equipment; set up cardiac and physiological monitors. Demonstrate aseptic technique as defined by AORN and the Joint Commission for all anesthesia and surgical supplies and equipment. Clean anesthesia machines, cables, carts, blood warmers, heating blankets, IV poles, and other equipment; consult with biomedical as needed. Maintain cleanliness and organization of the anesthesia workroom; keep supply stock in workrooms and stations. Ensure operating rooms and workrooms have appropriate stock of disposable and durable medical equipment. Oversee monitoring and documentation of all anesthesia equipment for safety, quality control, and preventative maintenance. Ensure proper functioning and integrity of anesthesia equipment. Troubleshoot anesthesia machine and equipment. Replace soda‑absorber granules weekly or sooner if needed. Review induction room/operating room equipment daily to ensure function and availability, including stretchers, oxygen tanks, gauges, monitors, and suction devices. Clean and sterilize laryngoscope handles, blades, LMA, and return them to proper location. Document and seek repair of malfunctioning anesthesia equipment. Assists with transport of patients to the OR. Risk and Safety Speak up when team members exhibit unsafe behavior or performance. Promote safety for patients, families, visitors, and coworkers. Handle sharps safely and protectively. Apply correct disinfection techniques and follow manufacturer protocols. Follow laboratory protocols and standards for specimen handling and blood products. Perform all activities per OSHA guidelines and best practices; observe aseptic principles. Validate and verify information needed for decision making. Stop to resolve uncertainty and take time to address situations. Attend to details using the Stop, Think, Act, and Review framework. Assist anesthesia department in emergency situations. Check expiration dates of medication and return expired medication to pharmacy. Assist in between‑case preparation; dispose of trash properly. Communicate accurately, clearly, and promptly in written and verbal forms. Accountability and Professional Judgment Show accountability and professional judgment. Identify learning needs and seek opportunities to meet them. Participate in staff meetings and in‑services to improve skills. Complete, document, and report all mandatory education and training. Report patient/family concerns or complaints to the charge nurse immediately. Seek assistance from coordinator, manager, or charge nurse when needed. Qualifications Minimum Education: High School Diploma or GED (Required). Preferred: Completion of an approved anesthesia technician curriculum or CNH anesthesia technician curriculum. Minimum Work Experience: 3 years as an anesthesia technician (Required). Preferred: 1 year in pediatrics, trauma, and cardiac experience. Required Skills & Knowledge Human relation and interpersonal skills. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to speak, read, write, and understand primary language used in the workplace. Collaborate with anesthesia team to develop plan of care for each patient. Assist in set‑up of anesthesia equipment and supplies; ensure all equipment is functioning before use. Understand importance of sterilization verification, integrity of sterile packaging, and opening of appropriate supplies. Serve as a clinical resource to support and develop peers. Use supplies cost‑effectively to avoid waste. Required Licenses & Certifications Basic Life Support for Healthcare Provider (BLS) upon hire (Required). ASATT (Preferred).
