Teaching dance means training pupils in how to use their bodies to communicate and to present themselves artistically and professionally. The responsibilities of a dance educator include creating lesson plans, teaching students about dance and the history of dance, assisting students in creating their own dance pieces, organizing and managing the learning environment, directing performance rehearsals, and assessing student performances. In addition to teaching dance electives, the teacher of dance is expected to choreograph two mainstage theatre productions each year. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Working as a dance teacher requires flexibility, determination, and lots of energy. Ability to use computer network system and software applications as needed. Ability to organize and coordinate work. Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work. Certification: NJ Standard, CEAS, or CE as a Teacher of Dance (Endorsement #1635) Education: Minimum of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in education discipline applicable to teaching assignment. Experience: Preferably, candidates will have had prior college-level and/or professional dance performance and/or teaching experience.
