Vehicle Tech II

The job of Vehicle Tech II is done for the purpose of ensuring the availability of vehicles in safe operating condition, including determining needed repairs and/or replacements on district vehicles; performing required repairs and preventive maintenance and providing written documentation of repairs to meet district, state, and federal requirements.

Essential Functions

• Adjusts parts, components, systems (e.g., computerized systems, carburetors, valves, pistons, rings, bearings, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the fitness and proper operation of all vehicles.
• Checks fluid levels, tire pressure, and accessory items (e.g., batteries, light bulbs, fuses, fan belts, wiper blades, etc.) for the purpose of identifying possible leaks and needed repairs, adjustments, or replacements to maintain vehicles in good working order.
• Diagnoses potential vehicle malfunctions for the purpose of determining needed vehicle repairs and/or replacements.
• Fabricates parts for the purpose of providing items necessary for repairs.
• Inspects school buses and other district vehicles for the purpose of adhering to a preventive maintenance schedule and safety inspection standards and requirements.
• Maintains tools, equipment, and/or shop area for the purpose of ensuring the availability and functioning of required tools and equipment within a safe work area.
• Performs road tests on all vehicles/school buses for the purpose of ensuring that vehicles are in safe operating order.
• Prepares documentation (e.g., records of repairs, maintenance logs, costs, vehicle warranties, etc.) for the purpose of conveying required information and meeting federal and state requirements.
• Repairs vehicle systems/components, etc. (e.g., diesel/gasoline engines, transmissions, differentials, clutches, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the availability of vehicles in safe operating condition.
• Replaces all defective vehicle parts/systems (e.g., brakes, fuel pumps, fuel lines, gauges, electrical wiring, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the availability of vehicles in a safe operating condition.
• Responds to road calls regarding disabled vehicles for the purpose of performing emergency repair work in the field and/or determining if a vehicle needs to be towed.
• Trains with less experienced mechanics may be required for the purpose of providing information on the proper operation of equipment and ensuring repairs are performed safely and within specifications.

Other Functions

• Assists other mechanics and/or assistant mechanics as needed for the purpose of completing difficult tasks and responding to coworker requests.
• Assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities.
• Attends safety meetings and other in-service meetings for the purpose of making sure the job is done in a safe manner.

Mental Requirements

Learning Development- Level D Specialized vocational or technical knowledge providing a command of certain technical, administrative, and/or operative practices and techniques. Learning development involves the completion of a formal technical/vocational curriculum often resulting in a degree.

Problem Solving - Level 2 Work situations require consideration and interpretation of circumstances or information to choose the most effective responses. Solutions may be somewhat technical, yet are relatively straightforward, obvious, and well-defined once problems are understood. Responses come from the realm of prior learning and experiences.

Physical Requirements

Physical Skill - Level A Basic level of learned physical skill is required. No special coordination beyond that used for normal mobility and handling of everyday objects and materials is needed to perform the job satisfactorily.

Physical Effort - Level 2 Job requires light physical effort as a part of regular work routine, such as frequent standing and walking; frequent lifting, guiding, and/or carrying of light-weight materials or equipment; occasional periods of sustained effort.

Human Relations Skill- Level A Job requires ordinary conversational skills and courtesy to exchange routine information, provide routine assistance, and/or help maintain harmony among work associates.

Scope of Contacts - Level 1 The important job contacts are with peers in the immediate work group and immediate supervisor. Occasional contact with individuals outside the organization may occur.

Work Environment

Performance Environment - Level A Changes in environments, work pressure, disturbances of workflow, and irregularities in work schedules are infrequent.

Physical Working Conditions - Level 4 Extensive and continuous exposure to hazardous conditions. Dangerous work situations. High likelihood of serious injury or illness if proper precautions are not taken. Highly undesirable assignments.

Level of Accountability -Level B Responsible for producing journey-level work output on an independent basis subject to supervisory direction and review.

Organizational Impact - Level 2 Work results impact the accuracy, reliability, and acceptability of further results beyond the immediate work section. Work results are noticeable and represent a portion of, or support product or service received by the customer or general public.

Experience, Education, and Certifications

Experience: Job related experience is required

Education: High school diploma or equivalent

Certifications/Clearances: Must possess a valid Arizona DPS Level One IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card while employed. Commercial Driver's License Class B with P&S endorsements, DPS issued Student certificate, 609 Refrigerant certificate

FLSA Status: Non Exempt

Pay Schedule: Hourly - Grade 116
