Through education, research, healthcare, community engagement, athletics, cultural enrichment, and service, ECU enhances the quality of life for its students, the state and communities around the world. It is a great place to work, teach, and learn. Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit - The organizational unit is the Department of Public Health at the Brody School of Medicine. Our Department of Public Health is committed to educating professionals and conducting research to improve the health of communities in our region and beyond. We practice a combination of science and social approaches to reduce disease and systematically address the multiple determinants of health. Our work is rooted in strong partnerships with the community, health and social services, industry and business, and academia. The evidence-based study and practice of Public Health have never been more important as our region, state, nation, and world face the combined crises of the COVID-19 pandemic and climate change. It is time to break down silos, build partnerships, and forge alliances to address these challenges. Eastern North Carolina has significant health burdens, especially in the rural, low-resource communities. Many of these issues are brought to light through environmental impacts in our region, such as natural disasters and climate change, and are substantially impacted by the social determinants of health. Addressing these health threats and the disparities that stem from them are the driving forces for our teaching, research, and service.
Learning opportunities of the department include: Two online Certificate programs The Master of Public Health degree program with three concentrations (which can be completed online) Two doctoral degrees: the DrPH programs in Health Policy, Administration, and Leadership and Environmental and Occupational Health. Public Health is collaborative in research and service and works with local, regional, state, and national public health and health care agencies, and works closely with and is guided by a group of Community Advisory Board members who lend their expertise to help us achieve program goals.
Primary Purpose of Position - The Department has an established program of caring for needy children as well as faculty and staff, in school-based settings in NC by providing acute minor medical care, behavioral counseling, and nutritional counseling using a combination of telehealth-delivered and on-site delivered care. In addition, this position may assist faculty who are conducting a demonstration project to better understand how telehealth might be used to deliver nutritional care in rural settings. This position is critical to the successful implementation, conduct, and evaluation of these large innovative telehealth programs that are improving access to care in rural areas of NC. The Research Associate will assist the Project Director and Project Manager in the coordination of all aspects of the day-to-day logistical implementation, and continued development of the program, and will serve as Director of Evaluation for these two major telehealth programs and related projects that may arise, including support for new intervention strategies as well as being independently responsible for the evaluation of both patient and health system outcomes and subsequently reporting to funding agencies.
Minimum Education, Knowledge, Skills, and Experience - A master's degree is required in nursing, public health, social sciences, or a related field. Required degrees must be from appropriately accredited institutions.
License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation - N/A
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills, and Experience - Six months of experience working in primary care or public health settings. Knowledge and experience utilizing Excel, SAS, and SPSS. Knowledge, training, and experience in electronic health records and in the use of online survey tools (e.g., Qualtrics, RedCap). Experience working with rural and medically underserved populations.
