Position Summary Cornerstone Caregiving is seeking a Director, Labor & Employment to serve as a strategic legal partner supporting the company’s rapidly growing national operations. This role will focus on employment counseling, workplace investigations, employment policy development, labor and employment compliance, litigation management, and proactive legal risk mitigation across a multi-state healthcare organization. This is not a traditional litigation-heavy law firm role focused solely on adversarial legal practice. The position is designed for an attorney who enjoys the counseling, investigative, operational, and policy-focused aspects of labor and employment law and wants to partner closely with business leaders, Human Resources, and executive leadership in a highly collaborative environment. The Director, Labor & Employment will lead internal workplace investigations, oversee employment-related legal matters, provide day-to-day employment guidance, and help develop scalable policies and procedures that support Cornerstone’s continued nationwide growth. This individual will work closely with internal departments and executive leadership to ensure compliance with evolving employment laws while balancing legal risk, operational practicality, and employee experience. Key Responsibilities Employment Counseling
• Serve as the primary legal advisor on labor and employment matters across the company.
• Provide day-to-day legal counsel to Human Resources and company leadership regarding:
• Employment compliance
• Performance management
• Progressive discipline
• Leaves of absence
• Reasonable accommodations
• Workplace complaints
• Terminations
• Wage and pay concerns
• Interpret and advise on federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations.
• Deliver practical, business-oriented legal guidance that balances risk mitigation with operational flexibility. Workplace Investigations
• Lead and manage internal investigations involving:
• Discrimination
• Harassment
• Retaliation
• Misconduct
• Policy violations
• Employee complaints
• Conduct witness interviews, evaluate evidence, document findings, and provide recommendations for resolution.
• Partner with Human Resources and leadership teams to ensure investigations are handled professionally, consistently, and in accordance with company values and legal standards.
• Serve as a trusted internal advisor during sensitive employee relations matters and high-risk workplace situations. Employment Policy Development & Compliance
• Research, monitor, and maintain current knowledge of labor and employment laws and regulatory developments affecting company operations.
• Review, develop, revise, and implement employment policies, procedures, handbooks, and compliance practices.
• Build scalable employment frameworks and operational standards that support the company’s continued national expansion.
• Support ongoing policy modernization initiatives and employment-related best practices. Litigation Management & Pre-Litigation Strategy
• Manage employment-related litigation and pre-litigation matters from initial complaint through resolution.
• Draft and oversee responses to:
• EEOC charges
• Department of Labor and similar regulatory inquiries
• OSHA matters
• Subpoenas
• Administrative claims
• Demand letters
• Coordinate litigation strategy with outside counsel, including defensive litigation and restrictive covenant enforcement matters.
• Partner with other attorneys to manage outside counsel relationships, including scope, performance, legal strategy, and spend.
• Support litigation forecasting, risk assessments, settlement evaluations, and legal budgeting. Training & Cross-Functional Partnership
• Identify company training needs related to labor and employment compliance.
• Develop and assist in delivering management training programs covering:
• Workplace conduct
• Investigations
• Harassment prevention
• Documentation practices
• Employment law compliance
• Collaborate with Human Resources, executive leadership, and other internal departments on employment-related initiatives. Strategic Employment Support
• Support company initiatives involving workforce structure, operational growth, and evolving employment compliance needs.
• Provide legal guidance during organizational changes, workforce transitions, and strategic operational initiatives.
• Participate in special projects and strategic initiatives assigned by executive leadership. Physical Requirements
• Ability to sit or stand for extended periods.
• Frequent computer use, typing, and screen time.
• Occasional bending and stooping.
• Ability to lift up to 10 pounds regularly and up to 50 pounds as needed.
