IAM Systems Engineer for Research & HPC

Job Summary The University of Utah is looking for a Systems Engineer to design and manage our Identity and Access Management (IAM) ecosystem in a dynamic research environment with HPC clusters, diverse repositories, and specialized applications. The role focuses on eliminating authentication friction for university research while maintaining a rigorous security posture. Responsibilities Manage and fine‑tune Okta and/or Auth0 environments, including tenant management, policy definition, and advanced API configurations. Automate user onboarding and off‑boarding using SCIM and implement Just‑In‑Time provisioning for project‑based access. Assist with internal and external compliance audits; ensure authentication logs and access controls meet institutional and federal research standards. Lead the onboarding and configuration of authentication for scientific workflows; secure access to HPC resources and multi‑cloud data platforms. Implement and troubleshoot industry‑standard protocols (SAML, OIDC/OAuth 2.0, LDAP, RADIUS) to ensure interoperability across platforms. Design and maintain Single Sign‑On integrations, including enterprise connections and self‑service portals. Ensure all identity controls align with University Policy 4-004 and meet regulatory requirements including HIPAA and NIST 800‑171. Provide Tier 3 support for complex authentication issues, token/claims failures, and identity‑related security incidents. Maintain comprehensive technical documentation: architecture diagrams, integration standards, and operational runbooks. Minimum Qualifications 1 year of higher education may be substituted for 1 year of directly related work experience. For Information Security Engineer, IV: requires a bachelor’s (or equivalency) and 8 years of directly related work experience, or a master’s (or equivalency) and 6 years of directly related work experience. Preferences Experience automating IAM workflows with Octa Services, Terraform, Python, or PowerShell. Familiarity with Linux‑based research environments and High‑Performance Computing. Experience working within regulated data frameworks such as HIPAA, GDPR, or NIST 800‑171. Experience with beyond‑trust or similar secrets‑management tools.
