Job Overview
The Maintenance Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the efficient operation, maintenance, and repair of all plant equipment and facility systems to support production, safety, quality, sanitation, and regulatory compliance. This role supervises and supports the maintenance team to ensure equipment and infrastructure are maintained in a manner that protects product safety, quality, and legality, while meeting SQF food safety requirements, Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs), and company standards.
The Maintenance Supervisor plays a key role in executing maintenance activities that support preventive controls, sanitation effectiveness, and audit readiness while ensuring production goals are met.
Key Responsibilities
Team Leadership & Supervision
- Oversee and direct the maintenance team to ensure compliance with safety procedures, sanitation requirements, production standards, SQF food safety expectations, and GMPs.
- Assign work orders, monitor progress, and verify timely, high‑quality completion of maintenance tasks without introducing food safety or contamination risks.
- Provide leadership and support to foster a culture of safety, food safety awareness, accountability, and teamwork.
- Evaluate team performance, provide coaching and training, and ensure employees are competent in technical skills and food safety‑related responsibilities.
Maintenance & Equipment Management (Food Safety Focused)
- Lead and participate in emergency and unscheduled repairs during production, ensuring repairs protect product safety and minimize downtime.
- Execute scheduled maintenance activities per approved work orders and preventive maintenance plans.
- Perform hands‑on mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic troubleshooting and repair while maintaining hygienic conditions and GMP compliance.
- Operate and maintain critical equipment, including IQF freezers, packaging lines, ammonia refrigeration systems, and other production machinery in accordance with food safety and regulatory requirements.
- Perform welding and fabrication as needed, ensuring materials, finishes, and methods meet hygienic design and food safety standards.
- Read and interpret equipment manuals, SOPs, and work orders to ensure maintenance is performed correctly and safely.
- Diagnose equipment issues, complete repairs, and verify equipment performance to specification before release for production.
- Conduct routine preventive maintenance on equipment and facilities to prevent breakdowns, sanitation failures, and food safety risks.
Preventive Maintenance & System Performance
- Implement and manage preventive maintenance schedules for all plant machinery, equipment, and systems to reduce downtime and improve reliability while supporting SQF system effectiveness.
- Perform or oversee plumbing maintenance to ensure systems operate efficiently and do not pose contamination or cross‑connection risks.
- Ensure proper, safe use of tools, meters, and material‑handling equipment by maintenance personnel to prevent contamination or equipment damage.
- Identify and report faulty operations, defective materials, or unusual conditions that could impact operations or food safety to appropriate leadership.
Food Safety, Compliance & Reporting
- Ensure strict adherence to safety regulations, SQF requirements, HACCP principles, GMPs, and company food safety procedures.
- Maintain clean, organized maintenance work areas to support sanitation programs and prevent contamination.
- Ensure maintenance personnel follow PPE, lock‑out/tag‑out, hygiene, and food safety rules at all times.
- Support food safety and quality goals by promptly reporting and assisting with correction of maintenance‑related food safety risks.
- Prepare and submit accurate maintenance reports, work orders, and records to support traceability and audit readiness.
- Facilitate effective communication during shift changes to ensure continuity of maintenance activities and food safety controls.
Continuous Improvement
- Evaluate maintenance processes and recommend improvements to enhance equipment reliability, hygienic design, efficiency, and food safety risk reduction.
- Promote a positive team environment that supports collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement.
- Stay current with new equipment, maintenance practices, and technology changes, ensuring new systems are implemented in compliance with food safety requirements.
Additional Responsibilities
- Ensure company quality and food safety standards are consistently upheld across all maintenance activities.
- Support internal and external audits (SQF, regulatory, customer) by addressing maintenance‑related observations and corrective actions.
- Perform additional duties as assigned to support plant operations, compliance, and SQF readiness.
