Wayne-Westland Community Schools is located in the metropolitan Detroit area, between Ann Arbor and Detroit. Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Performs skilled carpentry work in the construction, repair, alteration, and maintenance of district buildings, facilities, classrooms, offices, and other structures.
• Constructs, installs, repairs, and replaces doors, door frames, windows, cabinets, countertops, shelving, trim, flooring, ceilings, walls, and other building components.
• Performs rough and finish carpentry, including framing, drywall installation and repair, woodwork, molding, trim, and related construction activities.
• Repairs and maintains doors, locks, hinges, closers, panic hardware, and other building hardware as assigned.
• Inspects and performs minor roof repairs.
• Installs, repairs, and maintains classroom and office fixtures, cabinetry, shelving, whiteboards, bulletin boards, and other facility furnishings.
• Performs drywall repairs, patching, taping, sanding, and preparation for painting or finishing.
• Measures, cuts, fits, and installs lumber, plywood, drywall, flooring materials, and other construction materials using appropriate hand and power tools.
• Reads and interprets blueprints, drawings, specifications, measurements, and work orders to determine materials, dimensions, and work requirements.
• Performs preventative maintenance and identifies building conditions requiring repair or corrective action.
• Responds to building work orders and emergency maintenance requests in a timely manner while prioritizing safety and minimizing disruption to students and staff.
• Assists with building renovations, remodeling projects, and capital improvement projects as directed by the Executive Director of Maintenance & Operations Department.
• Works cooperatively with other Maintenance & Operations trades, contractors, building administrators, and district personnel to complete projects and resolve facility issues.
• Safely operates and maintains hand tools, power tools, ladders, lifts, and other equipment required to perform assigned duties.
• Maintains a clean, organized, and safe work area and properly secures tools, equipment, and materials when work is completed.
• Follows all district safety procedures, applicable OSHA/MIOSHA requirements, building codes, and manufacturer recommendations.
• Maintains accurate records of work performed, materials used, and equipment or facility conditions requiring additional attention.
• Assists with snow removal, emergency response, or other district-wide maintenance activities when necessary.
• Maintains professional and courteous communication with building staff, students, contractors, and members of the public.
• Performs other related duties consistent with the classification and assigned by the Executive Director of Maintenance & Operations or Supervisor of Custodial Operations.

Education and Experience

• High School diploma, GED, or equivalent
• Builders License preferred
• Experience in roofing repairs to rubber and EPDM Preferred.
• Completion of a recognized carpentry apprenticeship program, vocational/technical training in carpentry, or equivalent combination of education and training preferred.
• Minimum of three (3) years of experience in carpentry, building construction, remodeling, or facility maintenance preferred.
• Experience working in a commercial, institutional, school, or similar facility environment preferred.
• Demonstrated ability to safely operate hand tools, power tools, ladders, lifts, and other equipment commonly used in carpentry and building maintenance.
• Valid Michigan driver's license with a satisfactory driving record required.
• Ability to obtain and maintain any required district or equipment-specific certifications.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Must be eligible to work in the United States
• Must have specific knowledge of current building codes
• Can interpret prints, sketches, specifications and oral instructions
• Must be familiar with the Michigan Right-To-Know Laws

Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to move around the District and occasionally remain in a stationary position. The employee frequently is required to inspect equipment and use the necessary tools to repair that equipment. The employee must also be able to work in the position by themselves. The employee must frequently move up to 50 lbs and/or individually push or pull up to 100 lbs. Individual must be able to inspect equipment and be aware of the surroundings. Employee must pass all District and Federal pre-employment requirements.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud. The employee is frequently required to interact with staff and occasionally with students and the public.

Job performance is evaluated in accordance with district guidelines.

The hourly rate, length of the workday and the number of workdays is based on the MEA/B.O.S.S. collective bargaining agreement.
