Job Title
The purpose of this job is to ensure city departments and personnel have properly working vehicles and equipment to do their jobs safely and effectively to include fire and police; provides maintenance and repairs to automotive, light and heavy equipment and specialized vehicles such as an apparatus.
This position works under close to general supervision according to set procedures but determines how or when to complete tasks.
Essential Functions/Typical Tasks
- Provides preventative maintenance to vehicles on a routine schedule.
- Inspects, repairs and maintains automobiles, trucks and equipment.
- Inspects, diagnoses problems and services automobiles, trucks and other equipment.
- Repairs brake systems, fuel systems, and electrical components.
- Repairs systems on heavy duty vehicles.
- Replaces transmissions, bearings, gears, etc.; repairs air conditioners.
- Installs water pumps, radiators, batteries, brakes and other equipment; changes oil.
- Replaces hydraulic lines on equipment.
- Performs state inspections on all city vehicles.
- Orders required parts and supplies; performs metal fabrication and welding repairs.
- Performs minor body repairs; paints equipment.
- Documents all work completed after each job.
- Performs related work as required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Physical Demands:
- Performs light to medium work that involves walking or standing virtually all of the time and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or skill, adeptness and speed in the use of the fingers, hands or limbs on repetitive operation of mechanical or electronic office or shop machines or tools within moderate tolerances or limits of accuracy.
Unavoidable Hazards (Work Environment):
- Involves routine and frequent exposure to:
- Bright/dim light; Dusts and pollen.
- Extreme heat and/or cold; Wet or humid conditions.
- Extreme noise levels, Animals/wildlife.
- Vibration; Fumes and/or noxious odors.
- Traffic; Moving machinery.
- Electrical shock; Heights.
Special Certifications and Licenses:
- EPA Section 609 Certification.
- State Inspection Drivers License.
- Must possess and maintain an appropriate, valid state commercial driver's license with an acceptable driving history.

Education and Experience & Special Requirements
Requires High School graduation or GED equivalent and supplemented by specialized courses/training equivalent to completion of one (1) year of college and one (1) year of experience as a mechanic on vehicles, light and heavy engines or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
