Atmospheric Scientist (Associate or Mid-Level) Company: The Boeing Company Location: Starfire Optical Range, Kirtland AFB, Albuquerque, New Mexico This position supports the data analysis, hardware, and software development of electro‑optical systems for the Air Force Research Laboratory Optics Division’s Space Domain Awareness mission. Responsibilities Provide daily detailed forecast for night operations. Work with onsite weather sensors, recommending improvements for instrumentation and visualizations. Interpret and validate numerical weather prediction data (GFS, ECMWF, HRRR, NAM, others) and communicate results to decision makers. Assist in developing and documenting weather requirements for telescope operations. Conduct analysis, modeling, and interpretation of Adaptive Optics systems, including model development of complex optics. Evaluate and verify optical system performance and design. Analyze meteorological data, write technical reports, and maintain a climatology database for the site. Conduct experiments with small telescopes and meteorological equipment. Observe and interpret real‑time digital weather radar and GOES satellite data. Understand relevant weather statistics and prediction indicators. Basic Qualifications (Required) Bachelor’s degree in Meteorology, Atmospheric Science, or a related natural science discipline. 2+ years of experience analyzing large datasets. 2+ years of programming experience in MATLAB, LabVIEW, Fortran, Java, Mathematica, or C++. 2+ years of experience forecasting meteorological parameters. Strong interpersonal skills and ability to present technical material to leadership and customers. Willingness to work variable shifts, including day, evening, night, and weekends. Preferred Qualifications (Desired) 5+ years of related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Active U.S. TS/SCI Security Clearance. Master’s or Ph.D. degree in Meteorology or Atmospheric Science. Experience with small telescopes. Experience with optical system design principles. Knowledge of atmospheric optical turbulence (Fried parameter, isoplanatic angle, Greenwood frequency). Involvement with Numerical Weather Prediction, including running and programming the Weather Research Forecast model. Experience with MODTRAN/FASCODE. Salary and Benefits Associate (Level2) pay range: $91,800–$124,200. Mid‑Level (Level3) pay range: $112,200–$151,800.
