Managing Editor

Position Summary NASW Press is seeking a Managing Editor, Books & Journals to manage the day-to-day editorial and production activities for NASW Press journals, books, and other publications. Key Responsibilities Editorial and Production Manage the editing and production of assigned NASW Press journals, books, and other publications. Develop and maintain production schedules and monitor projects to ensure that publications are completed on schedule. Correspond with authors, editors-in-chief, and others regarding editorial and production matters. Work with authors and editors-in-chief to resolve submission and editorial issues. Coordinate the design process with graphic designers for book covers and ads. Edit assigned manuscripts for journals, books, and other NASW publications, including reviewing and rewriting content to meet NASW Press editorial specifications. Review manuscripts and proofread page proofs, making corrections as needed. Assist with the submission, evaluation, and review process for book proposals, as needed. Coordinate the work of editorial freelancers as assigned, providing work instructions and reviewing their work for quality and accuracy. Staff Supervision Supervise the daily work activities of assigned staff. Determine work assignments, schedules, and priorities. Manage, train, and support assigned staff and monitor the quality of their work. Conduct performance evaluations and make recommendations regarding personnel matters. Budget and Operations Assist in preparing the editorial department's annual operating budget. Monitor and track actual expenses against the approved budget. Review related expenses and make recommendations as appropriate. Assist in developing and implementing NASW Press editorial and production policies, practices, and procedures. Ensure adherence to established policies and procedures and recommend changes when appropriate. Keep abreast of technological developments in the publishing and printing industries. Evaluate the effectiveness of NASW Press publishing processes and systems and recommend improvements. Website and Marketing Assist with product uploads and updates to the NASW Press website. Participate as a member of the NASW Press marketing team and contribute to marketing campaigns. Staff the NASW Press exhibit booth at conferences, as assigned. Editorial Boards and Committees Serve as a staff resource to NASW editorial boards and committees. Keep boards and committees informed about the status of assigned publications. Assist with scheduling and arranging board and committee meetings and developing meeting agendas. Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned. Working Relationships The Managing Editor works closely with NASW staff and management to ensure that NASW Press publications meet the Association's standards for quality and editorial excellence. The position interacts regularly with editorial boards and committees and participates in NASW Press marketing activities. Externally, the Managing Editor works with authors, editors, freelancers, customers, vendors, and other publishing partners to coordinate the preparation and production of manuscripts and publications. The position also interacts with conference attendees while staffing NASW Press exhibit booths. Qualifications Education Bachelor's degree in a related discipline or equivalent relevant work experience. Experience At least five years of related work experience. Demonstrated experience in publishing, management, or a supervisory capacity. Skills And Knowledge Demonstrated management and supervisory skills. Substantial knowledge of book and journal publishing. Excellent copyediting and proofreading skills. Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills. Knowledge of editorial procedures, production techniques, printing processes, graphics and design, print production, and related publishing processes. Experience with planning and budgeting. Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities. Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines. Strong command of the English language. #J-18808-Ljbffr
