Science Teacher

Job Summary Position responsible for creating a classroom environment that develops in each student an awareness of the role of science in economic and social progress, that motivates acquisition of knowledge and skills in scientific methods and discovers students’ special talents in science. Essential Duties Teach skills, knowledge, and scientific attitudes through courses in general science, biology, chemistry, physics, physiology, or science problems. Develop lesson plans and supplementary materials aligned with the division’s philosophy and SOL standards; provide individualized and small group instruction. Instruct students in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and district regulations. Plan a science program involving demonstrations, lectures, discussions, and experiments; organize laboratory activities. Demonstrate scientific concepts using apparatus, experiments, charts, sketches, and other aids. Provide individualized or small group instruction to adapt curriculum to student needs. Teach proper use, care, and safe handling of chemicals, equipment, plant and animal life. Evaluate academic and social growth, prepare report cards, keep attendance and other records. Provide safe storage and proper use of materials, equipment, and tools. Establish and maintain standards of student behavior for productive learning during class, labs, and field trips. Evaluate each student’s growth in knowledge and skills. Communicate with parents and school counselors about student progress. Supervise students in out‑of‑classroom activities during the working day. Participate in faculty committees and sponsorship of student activities. Administer testing in accordance with division practices. Model nondiscriminatory practices in all activities. (These duties are illustrative and are not exhaustive.) Other Duties Maintain professional competence by attending staff development, curriculum meetings, and other activities. Participate in student and parent activities such as PTA, clubs, and after‑school programs. Create effective learning environments through displays and bulletin boards. Perform other related duties as assigned by the Principal or appropriate administrator. Virginia Department of Education licensure eligibility for teaching science; possess or be eligible for an appropriate Virginia teaching license. Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, parents, and the public. Working Conditions and Physical Requirements Must be able to sit and stand for extended periods, use manual dexterity, see/read, hear, speak, lift up to 25 lbs, bend, stoop, climb stairs, and reach overhead. Work is primarily in a school/classroom environment, occasionally on field trips; noise level is usually moderate. Supervision Exercised May include instructional assistants, volunteers, tutors.
