Registered Nurse-Spinal Cord Injury

The VA Northeast Ohio Healthcare System is recruiting for a Full‑Time Registered Nurse. The Registered Nurse will function within the Patient Care Nursing Service under Acute Care Spinal Cord Injury‑6B. Qualifications English Language Proficiency – as required by 38 U.S.C. 7403(f), proficiency in basic written and spoken English is required for direct patient care positions. Graduate of an accredited professional nursing school – either ACEN or CCNE. Master’s level bridge program in nursing – may lead to state licensure prior to completion of the bridge program. Upon state license achievement, may be appointed temporarily and converted to permanent with successful completion. Foreign–educated graduates – must possess a current, full, active and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth. Foreign nursing education beyond associate degree requires formal equivalency validation from a recognized equivalency evaluator such as ICD. Graduate Nurse Technician (GNT) exception – may be appointed at entry step on a 120‑day temporary appointment while pursuing licensure; may be extended up to two years. Grade determination criteria – Scope of Education and Dimension criteria must be met; details for each grade and level are available online. Nurse I – Level I: fundamental, knowledge‑based care with technical competencies. Nurse I – Level II: integration of biopsychosocial concepts, cognitive skills, and technical practice for basic or complex clients. Nurse I – Level III: proficiency based on deliberate planning and self‑directed goal setting for complex client situations. Nurse II – Leadership in holistic care delivery and collaboration. Nurse III – Leadership, experience, and creative approaches to complex client care beyond the immediate practice setting. Preferred Experience: 2 years of medical‑surgical nursing and 2 years of long‑term care nursing. Physical Requirements: ability to bend, grasp, kneel, lift and carry up to 35 pounds, pivot waist and neck, walk, twist, and use mechanical lift, proper body mechanics, adequate vision and hearing. Duties Demonstrate integration of biopsychosocial principles, critical thinking, and technically proficient nursing practice in patient care delivery. Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care using age‑appropriate principles and interventions. Coordinate care emphasizing patient education, self‑management, and customer satisfaction across the continuum of care. Administer medications and perform procedures per policies and clinical guidelines. Collaborate with interdisciplinary team to influence patient care outcomes. Deliver technically proficient patient care in accordance with ANA Standards of Nursing Practice. Communicate effectively and demonstrate professional behavior that promotes cooperation and teamwork. Share expertise and foster collaborative opportunities to strengthen team cohesiveness. Apply sound clinical judgment to achieve optimal outcomes. Collaborate effectively with others, leveraging strengths and proactively meeting expanding responsibilities. Benefits VA Nurse Total Rewards Pay: Competitive salary, regular salary increases, potential performance awards. Paid Time Off: 50 days per year (26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid federal holidays). Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401(k) with up to 5 % VA match. Insurance: Federal health, vision, dental, term life and long‑term care, most programs carryable into retirement. Licensure: 1 full and unrestricted license from any U.S. state, territory or Commonwealth required. Work Schedule: Night shift with alternating weekends and holidays; no telework or virtual work.
