GIS Specialist
Walker Elliott
GIS Specialist - Energy Investment Banking
Our client is a Houston-based financial services firm specializing in the energy sector, offering integrated Investments, Research, Capital Markets, and Investment Banking services across the energy value chain. They provide strategic advisory and long-term value to clients navigating complex energy transactions.
They're looking for a GIS Specialist to join their Investment Banking team, primarily supporting Upstream engagements with additional work spanning midstream and oilfield services. This person will be involved in a wide variety of deal types, corporate M&A, divestitures, IPOs, equity capital markets transactions, and private capital raises.
This firm operates with a flatter, more entrepreneurial structure than a traditional bank. New team members take on real responsibility quickly, working closely with senior leaders and helping guide a team through the technical complexities facing today's energy businesses.
Responsibilities
• Create maps and geospatial visuals used in client-facing deliverables, pitch books, executive summaries, and management presentations
• Conduct spatial analysis across acreage positions, well and lease inventories, unit configurations, permitting activity, well spacing, and offset operator positioning in active U.S. basins
• Pull, integrate, and quality-check geospatial data from public sources (RRC, BOEM, FERC, EIA, USGS, and state agencies) as well as commercial platforms (Enverus/PRISM, Novi Labs, FactSet), turning raw data into clean, dependable datasets
• Validate client-provided and third-party shapefiles during technical due diligence, cross-checking spatial data against deal documentation
• Work directly with engineers and bankers to turn geospatial findings into deal-relevant insights, inventory upside, development spacing, acreage contiguity, and basin positioning, that support the broader commercial story
• Build automation into recurring GIS workflows to speed up turnaround across multiple active deals
• Maintain the firm's internal GIS data library, including layer standards, templates, and version control, so the team can work quickly without losing accuracy
• Respond to ad hoc mapping and data requests from bankers and technical staff, often on tight deal timelines Requirements
• A bachelor's degree in Geographic Information Science, Geography, or a closely related field; an advanced degree is a plus
• 4+ years of professional GIS experience, with a track record supporting upstream oil and gas transactions, A&D advisory, or energy investment banking
• Strong hands-on skill with ArcGIS Pro as your primary tool; comfort with ArcGIS Online, QGIS, or Python-based geospatial libraries (arcpy, geopandas) is a plus
• Direct experience with Enverus, Novi Labs, or similar business analytics platforms is preferred
• Working knowledge of U.S. Lower 48 basin and Gulf of America geology, play areas, and upstream asset structures, with the ability to contextualize geospatial data within a deal setting
• A demonstrated ability to produce polished, client-ready maps and exhibits under deal conditions
• Strong organizational skills, with the discipline to manage multiple active workstreams at once without sacrificing accuracy
• A strong work ethic, clear communication style, and a collaborative approach to teamwork This is an in-person role based in the firm's Houston office
Do not apply unless you are authorized to work in the United States for any employer as client company cannot sponsor or transfer visas at this time.
