You will serve as an ELECTRONICS MECHANIC in the ELECTRICAL SHOP, PRODUCTION RESOURCES DEPARTMENT of PORTSMOUTH NAVAL SHIPYARD.

Duties

Help

• You will Install, modify, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair fiber optic communication and control circuits integral to shipboard electronic systems.
• You will use a variety of electronic test equipment, such as oscilloscopes, pulse and signal generators, distortion and waveform analyzers, digital data generators, digital voltmeters, frequency and pulse counters, and special test panels.
• You will frequently lift and carries items weighing up to 40 pounds unassisted, and occasionally up to 50 pounds with assistance from other workers or with weight handling equipment.
• You will independently determine the nature and extent of repairs required on equipment that is normally complicated by variable and intricate relationships.

• Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test (including marijuana) is required. A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if you fail to report to the drug test appointment or fail the test. You will be subject to random testing.
• This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
• Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.

Qualifications

Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.

The Screen-out Element for this position is: ABILITY TO DO THE WORK OF THE POSITION WITHOUT MORE THAN NORMAL SUPERVISION

• Repairing complex electronic systems and equipment (copper or fiber-based).
• Performing precision termination and fusion splicing of fiber optic cables;
• Conducting optical testing using OTDRs, power meters, and related diagnostic equipment to isolate faults and verify system integrity.
• Troubleshooting systems by following signal paths through complex interconnections of components, assemblies, subassemblies, and connecting cable harnesses shown on schematics.
• Performing further tests and alignments to ensure the completed equipment is aligned and functioning properly.
• Repairing of one component often requires further adjustments and alignments of interrelated circuits to ensure proper function and transmission.
