Job Description

The Manufacturing Manager provides strategic and hands-on leadership for multiple production departments, overseeing supervisors and their teams to ensure safe, high-quality, and efficient operations across all shifts. This role develops and executes manufacturing plans that achieve service, quality, productivity, and continuous improvement goals, while optimizing labor and capital resources. The Manufacturing Manager plays a key role on the site leadership team, driving performance metrics, supporting certification objectives, and fostering a culture of safety, accountability, and collaboration.

Responsibilities

• Provide principal oversight of department supervisors, including assigning workloads, setting priorities, and ensuring clear expectations for performance, quality, and safety.

• Advocate for the safety and health of employees by promoting and enforcing safety policies, procedures, and continuous improvement in safety practices.

• Identify, develop, and prioritize manufacturing plans to meet service, quality, and productivity goals, including leading continuous improvement and waste reduction initiatives.

• Implement and sustain performance metrics to track and improve plant operations, and support efforts to achieve assigned certification goals.

• Develop employee commitment and ownership of plant continuous improvement projects while ensuring adherence to safety and quality system requirements.

• Establish a clear vision for assigned areas that aligns with site and corporate objectives, leveraging technology to improve performance, service, and product quality.

• Manage labor and capital resources to optimize systems and methods that meet business needs, balancing labor and expense budgets and scheduling resources for efficient operation.

• Oversee planned maintenance of equipment to support reliability, safety, and production targets.

• Serve as a key member of the site leadership team, interacting openly and collaboratively with other departments and external contacts.

• Assist in developing and executing the annual performance plan to achieve business goals for the site.

• Direct and support 4–6 department supervisors who report into this role, while reporting to the operations leadership team.

• Complete training across coatings, adhesive, converting, and packaging departments to fully understand processes and lead them effectively.

• Ensure consistent understanding and application of the collective bargaining agreement, holding individuals and supervisors accountable to union agreements.

• Lead problem-solving efforts by identifying root causes and implementing standardized, long-term solutions rather than temporary fixes.

• Drive standardization of processes and solutions to improve consistency, efficiency, and quality across departments and shifts.

• Champion safety and continuous improvement processes, including Process Safety Management (PSM) and 5S safety pillars.

• Collaborate with supervisors and leadership to develop action plans that align production numbers with performance systems and continuous improvement goals.

• Use data and performance metrics to monitor production, headcount, and financial outcomes, including responsibility for P&L statements and production numbers.

• Effectively use Microsoft Office and ERP systems to manage production schedules, payroll-related processes, and operational reporting.

• Participate in a tight-knit management team where decisions are made collaboratively, supporting a culture of shared responsibility and teamwork.

• Ensure production schedules and staffing plans support efficient operation across all three shifts in a union environment with a large workforce.

• Perform related duties as assigned to support overall plant performance and strategic objectives.

Essential Skills

• Minimum of 7+ years of managerial experience in a union manufacturing facility, overseeing all three shifts and a workforce of over 140 employees.

• Strong understanding of collective bargaining agreements and union environments, with the ability to hold individuals and supervisors accountable to agreement terms.

• Demonstrated experience in problem solving, including identifying root causes, implementing full solutions, and avoiding short-term fixes.

• Proven ability to standardize processes and solutions to drive improvements in efficiency, safety, and quality.

• Experience with safety and continuous improvement processes, including Process Safety Management (PSM) and its framework for preventing releases of toxic, reactive, and flammable chemicals.

• Ability to recognize and implement safety pillars such as 5S, and to take action that meaningfully improves safety performance.

• Operations management experience, including production management, production scheduling, and supervision of manufacturing processes.

• Hands-on experience with lean manufacturing and process improvement initiatives.

• Strong business management skills, including responsibility for P&L statements, headcount, and production numbers.

• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for analysis, reporting, and communication.

• Experience using ERP systems (such as Prizzo or other ERP platforms) for operations, production, and payroll-related activities.

• Ability to work effectively within a tight management team, making decisions collaboratively and supporting shared leadership.

• Strong leadership and supervision skills, with the ability to develop supervisors and frontline employees, build commitment, and drive continuous improvement.

• Excellent communication skills for interacting with cross-functional teams and external contacts.

• Comfort working in an industrial manufacturing environment that involves chemicals, heavy equipment, and multiple production processes.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience in tape, paper, or packaging manufacturing environments.

• Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field.

• Technical experience in maintenance, equipment, or related industrial technologies.

• Experience working in facilities that produce industrial and retail products, such as tape for large e-commerce, aerospace, and other industrial and retail customers.

• Familiarity with continuous improvement methodologies and performance systems beyond PSM and 5S.

• Project management experience, including leading cross-functional improvement projects.

• Ability to adapt leadership style to a family-oriented, team-focused environment while maintaining accountability and performance standards.

Work Environment

The role is based in an older industrial manufacturing facility that produces a wide range of tape products for industrial and retail customers. The environment involves working around chemicals and heavy equipment, with established processes in place to support ongoing production. Seasonal temperature variations are present, with colder conditions in winter and hotter conditions in summer. The atmosphere is described as a "cookie cutter" type setting that is somewhat dirtier due to the nature of manufacturing, yet maintains a laid-back and casual feel. Dress is typically casual and practical for an industrial environment. The culture is very family-oriented, with a strong emphasis on teamwork, collaboration, and supporting one another across departments and shifts. You will work closely with coatings, adhesive, converting, and packaging operations, using standard office technologies, Microsoft Office, and ERP systems within a production-focused setting.

Job Type & Location

This is a Permanent position based out of Marysville, MI.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $100000.00 - $125000.00/yr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
