Salary: $89,250 - 150,250 per year Requirements:

• 2+ years of professional software engineering experience.
• Hands-on experience building or contributing to AI-powered features, LLM-based applications, or applied machine learning systems, through work or projects.
• Strong software engineering fundamentals in at least one backend language: Python, Go, or TypeScript.
• Familiarity with APIs, basic cloud concepts, and modern development practices.
• Interest in agentic AI, autonomous systems, and AI-assisted development workflows.
• Willingness to learn, receive feedback, and grow technical ownership over time.
• Ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams.
• Customer-focused mindset and curiosity about solving real-world problems.
• Bachelors degree level is listed for this role.
• Preferred: exposure to LLM tooling, prompt engineering, RAG, or agent frameworks through work, coursework, or personal projects.
• Preferred: internship or early-career experience in fintech or another regulated environment.
• Preferred: contributions to open-source projects, hackathons, or AI- or developer-tooling-related side projects.

• Help design and implement LLM-powered and agentic product features.
• Build and extend agentic AI workflows that reason over context, use tools, and take actions with guidance from senior engineers.
• Help implement and maintain retrieval-augmented generation pipelines over financial data, emphasizing correctness and safety.
• Contribute to shared AI infrastructure, including LLM services, orchestration components, and evaluation or monitoring tools.
• Help operate AI systems in production by monitoring, debugging, and improving reliability and performance.
• Work with product and design partners to learn how to translate customer needs into technical solutions.
• Write production code, participate in system design discussions, and help operate systems after launch.

We are hiring an AI Engineer for our Enterprise Architecture team at American Express, in Phoenix, Arizona, or New York, New York, with a hybrid working arrangement. In collaboration with product, design, and business teams, we build enterprise-scale platforms and products for responsible agentic AI in financial services, with high standards for security, explainability, reliability, and compliance. This hands-on role offers mentorship and opportunities to develop expertise in LLMs, agentic systems, and production AI engineering. Our environment includes Python, Go, TypeScript, AWS and/or GCP, Kubernetes, REST, gRPC, event-driven systems such as Kafka, LLMs, agent orchestration, RAG, vector storage, evaluation, and AI-assisted development tools. We offer a salary range of $89,250–$150,250 annually, plus bonus and benefits.
